About The Author

After her final year at school, for reasons she still doesn’t completely understand, Kate started a Bachelor of Architecture. She lasted one week and half a day; her conviction that she was not on the right path was so strong that she left at lunchtime. She later explained this decision to her mother by saying that everyone else seemed to care about buildings a lot more than she did.

That day, when she left the campus with a spring in her step, she caught a bus straight to Hoyts on Pitt Street and experienced supreme joy watching Sense and Sensibility alone at the cinema. The following year she enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in English Literature. Books managed to hold her attention and she graduated with first class honours.

She should have known then that what she loves, above all else, is stories, but it took her quite some time to realise this. Between then and now, she’s been a barmaid, a waitress, a receptionist, an English teacher, and, since 2008, a Communication Consultant, helping executives to pitch and present. It wasn’t until 2020 that the storytelling itch got too strong to ignore and she enrolled in Faber Academy’s Writing a Novel program. It turned out to be an excellent decision.

Now, she spends most of her time thinking about imaginary people with complicated problems and dark secrets. The rest of the time, you’ll find her chauffeuring teenager boys to and from social engagements, walking her golden lab, and procrastinating in various cafes on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

        Synopsis

The author of the bestselling The Hunted returns with another unmissable, white-knuckle, gritty urban suspense thriller: think Jack Reacher meets John Wick in a high-octane, high-speed chase on the dark streets of Melbourne. A young woman is hiding out in a sleepy North Queensland tourist town, trying to stay under the radar, when she stumbles across a dangerous drug cartel. Anyone else might back away shaking their head, pretend they hadn't seen anything, keep quiet, even though people are getting hurt. But Maggie is no ordinary girl. She's got skills, as well as plenty of secrets to keep, burdens to carry - and anger to burn. When circumstances mean that she has to get out of town - fast - she heads towards Melbourne, where she just might find the answers that she needs - answers about her family and who she really is. With a bent cop for a dubious ally, the police tracking her and furious bikers on her trail, Maggie is in deep trouble. She's only got her ingenuity and wits on her side - and a determination not to inherit the sins of her father. A powerhouse, fast-paced, high adrenalin and tense thriller from Gabriel Bergmoser, author of the critically acclaimed bestselling outback noir The Hunted.

        Kate Horan

Kate Horan has spent the last seventeen years working in corporate communications, helping executives to pitch and present. Before that, she taught English and Drama at high schools in western Sydney where she relished inspiring teenagers with a love of reading and writing. She graduated from the University of Sydney in 2001 with an Honours degree in English Literature. She traces her love of storytelling back to her childhood when she would listen to her father and grandfather telling stories around the dinner table. Always a voracious reader, as a child she was often in trouble for reading under the quilt with a torch after lights out, and she firmly believes bookshops are the most magical places on earth. After many years of feeling the niggle to write her own stories, she attended Faber Academy's Writing a Novel program in 2020.When she's not dreaming up stories about complicated families with dark secrets, she's kid-wrangling her two young, high-spirited boys, listening to podcasts and walking her golden lab on Sydney's beautiful Northern Beaches.
