Classic Crime with a Modern Twist: Read our Review of The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…

There’s a serial killer on the loose.

When bodies start washing up along the banks of the River Thames, DI Henley fears it is the work of Peter Olivier, the notorious Jigsaw Killer. But it can’t be him; Olivier is already behind bars, and Henley was the one who put him there.

The race is on before more bodies are found.

She’d hoped she’d never have to see his face again, but Henley knows Olivier might be the best chance they have at stopping the copycat killer. But when Olivier learns of the new murders, helping Henley is the last thing on his mind…

Will it take a killer to catch the killer?

Now all bets are off, and the race is on to catch the killer before the body count rises. But who will get there first – Henley, or the Jigsaw Killer?

Nothing beats curling up on a Sunday afternoon with a good thriller to keep you entertained, even when it’s as terrifying and spine-tingling as Nadine Matheson’s new crime novel, The Jigsaw Man. Bursting with atmosphere and a story that screams movie adaption, Matheson has created a suspenseful, fast-paced novel that brings to life the horrifying Jigsaw Killer.

Something that stuck out for me was how every police procedure and crime scene felt so real. Matheson herself is a criminal solicitor so it’s no surprise that she is able to put so much authenticity into the gritty details of the police work. Immersion is such an important part of any good thriller and Matheson pulled it off spectacularly. I found myself locking the doors and windows after each sitting.

The scenes between Henley and the Jigsaw Killer reminded me of Silence of the Lambs and ended up being some of the tensest scenes in the novel. I loved the way Matheson depicted the interactions between them as they go from adversaries to unlikely allies, and you can feel the weight in every conversation they share.

Reminiscent of classic crime fiction, The Jigsaw Man takes this familiar formula and gives it its own spin. With superbly written characters and an authentic look at police procedure – all tied together with the unforgettable Jigsaw Killer – this is a novel that’s begging to be added to your TBR list. I can’t wait to see what Nadine Matheson does next.
