A child’s day in the garden with their Gran and Pa leads to a wonderful exploration of pollination.
Join them in discovering how pollination happens in our gardens and backyards, and the importance it has for our environment. Meet the animals involved in pollination and the plants that depend on pollination to produce our fruit, vegetables and even our clothes!
What begins as a sunny day of tending a garden, suddenly turns into a colourful and educational story all about the importance of pollination. From the humble ant to the elusive sugar glider, author Christopher Cheng explores every part of the pollination process tied together with vibrant and adorable illustrations from Danny Snell.
Through the child’s grandparents, we learn all about the vital animals that help pollinate their garden. Everything from a few raspberries to the clothes we wear are all part of this environmental process, highlighting important messages of environmentalism and sustainability.
Cheng has a knack for blending educational information into a heartwarming story, creating an extremely accessible read for early readers. There’s even a small fact sheet at the end of the book with helpful gardening tips and colourful diagrams explaining the parts of a flower.
The illustrations by Snell are simply gorgeous; I especially loved where the many different animals are covered in pollen. The whole book looks and reads like a TV show with his vivid and almost animated style.
Pollination is a standout picture book that teaches readers about the environment, sustainability and the animals that help bring us everything from food to clothing. We recommend it for early readers aged 5+.
