Surviving the Wild is a heart-warming and educational early reader graphic novel series featuring adorable animals surviving in the wilderness despite the perils of climate change. Rainbow the Koala and Star the Elephant, the first two titles in this encouraging series, were instant BR Kids’ favourites. You can find reviews for both books here. Now back with the third instalment, Remy Lai’s Sunny the Shark is a vibrant story of a Shark trying to get a pesky plastic ring off its body. Blending an environmental message with a lively cast of characters, this is another fantastic instalment in this standout series.
Following Oceanic Whitetip shark Sunny, the story explores the environmental impact of plastic polluting the oceans, and the effects it has on the creatures inhabiting them. Sunny unfortunately becomes tangled in a balloon ribbon, and with her trusty pilot fish unable to help, she’s forced to find another way to get free. With climate change becoming more relevant than ever, it’s important to educate kids on the effects that it can have on the animal world. As with the last two books in the series, Lai shows us that it’s up to us and our future generations to help protect wildlife. Lai’s inclusion of the environmental information at the back of the book gives readers some great information and tips on how to help prevent further pollution of the oceans.
The graphic novel itself is filled with dynamic full-colour illustrations from Lai that give the novel an almost animated feel. Something that really stuck out was how the colours shift depending on Sunny’s emotions. We see a bright and vibrant world at the start, and then a more muted and darker colour tone when Sunny starts to lose hope, which really helps readers connect to Sunny as a character.
For animal lovers everywhere, Sunny the Shark is a marvellous graphic novel with an important message tying it all together. A perfect gift for kids aged 6+.
