A Gripping Thriller: Read an Extract from The Last Trace by Petronella McGovern
Meomory’s a slippery bastard, Lachy thought, his face hot with shame, he blinked and tried to focus on the teenager sitting opposite him. Kai was devouring a hamburger, elbows propped on the table, a soft groan of delight accompanying each mouthful.

Lachy took in the long bar, a sprinkling of diners at wooden tables and the historic photos on the walls. They were at the Dalgety pub. Bloody hell, he must have had a blackout. That had never happened before with his son around. Oh God, had he driven here from the cabin?

Kai licked a blob of barbecue sauce from his lips and continued their conversation. ‘So, if the ski fields open in June, when can we go snowboarding?’

On Lachy’s placemat sat a half-eaten bowl of vegetarian nachos and a schooner of sparkling water. He lifted his glass, desperate for something cool to douse the burning shame. But when the liquid fizzed on his tongue, he was surprised by the sugary taste of lemonade.

With the alcohol burning in his throat, he typed out an email, double-checking each word, hoping Juliet would answer this time. She must have received her report by now—it would indicate if his DNA was a match. Pressing send, he noticed a new message from head office pop up. He slammed the laptop shut, but it was too late: the sounds from the Kenya project flooded his brain. He’d slugged another whisky, blocking outwork. And another.

Those moments, and the forgotten ones in between, had led to here, now…
