Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller is back, and he’s taken on another long-shot case. The chance of winning is one in a million…
Defence attorney Mickey Haller has agreed to represent a woman who is in prison for killing her husband, a sheriff’s deputy, and Haller enlists his half-brother, retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, as investigator. Even after four years in prison, his new client maintains her innocence.
Reviewing the case, Bosch sees something that doesn’t add up and senses the sheriff’s department close ranks as he pursues the truth.
The path to true justice is, for both the lawyer and his investigator, fraught with danger from those who don’t want the case reopened. And their opponents will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from uncovering what the deputy’s killing was really about.
For the handful of readers who are yet to experience a Michael Connelly thriller, you’re in for a ride. Connelly is the megastar bestselling author of the Lincoln Lawyer series and Harry Bosch series, now both hit TV series which Connelly is the executive producer of. His books have won multiple awards including the CWA Diamond Dagger, the highest honour in British crime writing. Each and every time you pick up one of his books, you know he’ll deliver.
Now, Connelly returns with Resurrection Walk, a novel that falls under both the Harry Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer thrillers. If you’re a fan of either series, or both, this one’s for you. And if you’ve never read any of these, don’t worry, all of Connelly’s novels read well as standalones.
The case in this novel is an interesting one. Lucinda is a woman who has spent the past five years in prison after pleading no contest to the shooting of her husband – a man who also happened to be an undercover cop. Lucina writes her plea for innocence in a letter which finds its way to Haller and Bosch. They sense some truth behind her assertion of innocence, and take on her case. So ensues a propulsive, twisty, page-turning read about authenticity and the pursuit for justice.
I’ve always loved when half-brothers Bosch and Haller work together, so I was thrilled to see them reunite here, despite Bosch’s retirement. They each have their individual strengths, but I mostly enjoyed seeing how they combine their ideas with a unique ebb and flow. Between Bosch’s meticulous police procedurals and Haller being a gun in the courtroom, this is one powerful, crime-fighting duo.
Throughout, Connelly also touches on timely themes, including Artificial Intelligence and how it can be used to help prove Lucinda’s innocence, as well as geo-fencing – the tracking of a person’s cellular data to follow their locations. It’s fascinating and expertly woven in.
Connelly’s crime novels sit atop a very strong genre. If you’re new to his work, then you have a huge backlist to discover. If you’re already a fan, you never have to wait too long for a new novel – Connelly is prolific. Resurrection Walk is the perfect novel to end your reading year with a bang.
