Three couples, friends since high school, rent a luxurious house in the mountains for an unplugged weekend of drinking and bushwalking. No internet, no phones, no stress. On the first night, the topic of partner-swapping comes up. It’s a joke – at first.
Not everyone is keen, but an agreement is made. The lights will be turned out. The three women will go into the three bedrooms. The three men will each pick a room at random. It won’t be awkward later, because they won’t know who they’ve slept with – or can pretend they don’t.
But when the lights come back on, one of the men is dead. No-one will admit to being his partner. The phones still don’t work, and now the car key is missing. They’re stranded. And the killer is just getting started…
Jack Heath published his first novel at just seventeen years of age. He’s now the #1 bestselling author of 40 novels for both adults and kids, published in nine languages. His first crime thriller, Hangman, was voted one of the 100 best books of all time (twice). Other bestsellers include Headcase, Hideout, Hunter and his 2021 book, Kill Your Brother, which was shortlisted for best crime novel at the Ned Kelly Awards.
Now, his latest takes readers on a twisty, wild and extremely fun ride. Three couples in their thirties, friends from high school, are on an isolated weekend getaway in the bush. Despite the tension between them, a game of truth or dare leads to a partner swap with the lights off. When the lights come back on, one of them is dead. There’s no phone, no internet and no way of leaving – and the killer has not finished yet.
Chapters alternate between a number of the six friends, Senior Constable Kiara Lui and Elise, who we met in Kill Your Brother. It’s a lightning-paced page-turner with short, punchy chapters, skillful dialogue and some really great twists, including a surprising end-twist about that night… I wish I could say more but you’ll need to read this one for yourself. I’ve enjoyed several of Heath’s previous thrillers, but this is next level.
Kill Your Husbands is a nail-biting, funny, rollercoaster of a read, perfect for the holidays. Save this for a lazy beach day and start early… you won’t put it down until you’re finished.
