You’ve got yoghurt in your nostrils, avocado-smeared hair, bacon in your bellybutton, and toast crusts on your chair.
Bethany Clark and Sara Acton have served up a scrumptious treat in this joyous celebration of the tastes, textures and glorious mess involved in learning to feed ourselves.
Clark worked for years making and talking about books with many of Australia’s best authors, booksellers, librarians and publishers before she found herself as the manager of snacks for a small child. Becoming a mother inspired Clark to write this fabulous, hilarious and realistic picture book.
In You’ve Got Yoghurt in Your Nostrils, readers join baby as they discover how much fun food can be – and not just to eat! From bath time to dinner time to party time, there are a lot of delicious foods to learn to love, despite the messes they make. This one’s for the parents and carers just as much as it is for the kids!
Sara Acton is an award-winning author and illustrator whose first picture book, Ben and Duck, won the 2012 Children’s Book Council of Australia Crichton Award for new illustrators. In this, Acton’s compelling illustrations perfectly complement Clarks’ effective text.
Against white pages, we see Acton’s fantastic watercolour-style illustrations come to life, putting children and their journeys of discovering new foods front and centre. Kids will enjoy spotting foods they may know, such as birthday cake and various fruits, but might also find foods they haven’t yet come across, such as avocado and bacon. I also definitely spotted some fairy bread… but I won’t tell the kiddos.
You’ve Got Yoghurt in Your Nostrils is perfect for storytime reading. Parents and carers can also use this to encourage children to discover new foods, and even extend the reading experience into real life by pointing out different foods they spot from the book! There are so many shared reading opportunities to be had with this fun picture book. We recommend it for children of all ages, newborns and up.
