Captivating and Heartfelt: Read our Review of The Lucky List by Rachael Lippincott

Two girls, one list and twelve chances to fall in love this summer…

Emily’s always been lucky.

Well, technically her mum was the lucky one, and since she died, Emily’s started to feel like her luck’s run out. So when Emily finds her mum’s senior-year bucket list, she finds twelve ways to feel close to her again. But if she wants to check everything off, she’ll need help—help in the form of Blake.

As Blake and Emily work through the list, the girls’ bond deepens. Emily is starting to feel lucky again, but she’s faced with the question: can she accept this new part of herself, the part her mum never even knew existed?

Rachael Lippincott is the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Five Feet Apart, All This Time, and She Gets the Girl, as well as the author of The Lucky List.

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but upon picking up this beautiful book, I was immediately enchanted The Lucky List. The paper-themed love heart outlined in blue flowers against a yellow background is striking and sure to captivate a YA readership. This initial judgement was positive, and the story itself did not disappoint either!

Grief and discovery are two of the most prominent themes in this coming-of-age novel. As Emily goes through the grieving process of losing her mother and moving out of her family home, she encounters change at every corner.

I also enjoyed following Blake’s character within the story. Emily and Blake share an interesting dynamic, with each girl’s strengths balancing out the other’s weaknesses, while never allowing one to overshadow the other; they complement each other. In life and love, we look for moments of completion and certainty, but through Emily and Blake’s relationship, we see that moving forward can be enough to establish this idea of closure. I was moved by this remarkable read.

The Lucky List is a captivating, heartfelt love story about learning who you are and who you love, when the person you’ve always shared yourself with is gone. Perfect for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, this’ll be a great addition to any YA bookshelf.
