Dark and Twisty: Read Our Review of The Binding Room by Nadine Matheson

From the author of The Jigsaw Man comes the next book in Nadine Matheson’s DI Henley series.

In this room, no one can hear you scream…

The Serial Crimes Unit are called in to investigate when a local pastor is found stabbed to death. As DI Henley assesses the crime scene, she discovers a hidden door that conceals a room set up for torture – and bound to the bed in the middle of the room is the body of a man.

When another body is found, also tied down, Henley realises there’s someone out there torturing innocent people and leaving them for dead. But why?

There’s nothing that connects the victims. They didn’t know each other. Their paths never crossed. But someone has targeted them, and it’s up to Henley and the SCU to stop them before they find another binding room…

Nadine Matheson scared us senseless with The Jigsaw Man, a gripping thriller about a copycat serial killer case. It was the first in the DI Henley series, starting strong, and now with book #2, it’s obvious Matheson is here to stay. Her novels sit within a very specific crime sub-genre; not for the squeamish, these books are dark, deeply disturbing and contain themes that nowadays contain trigger warnings. In The Binding Room, that includes rape and sexual assault. While confronting, Matheson excels at writing police procedural, and It’s that element that really makes her books so engrossing.

DI Anjelica Henley and her partner Salim Ramouter return, and once again make a compelling team. Henley is in therapy for PTSD after the last novel, and if you’ve read it, you’ll understand why. Matheson writes extremely well, her prose gritty and urgent. This novel is plotted to perfection and filled with unforeseen twists and turns, and many blood-soaked descriptions that are not for the squeamish. I sped through those, but otherwise couldn’t put this down. And, rare for me now, I was completely surprised by the ending. In fact, you’ll need a crystal ball to predict this one.

The Binding Room is a mesmerizing crime thriller. Sick, slick and sensational. It’s clear that Matheson is setting this series up for the long term. Anyone who likes their crime on the dark side, don’t miss this. I guarantee that Nadine Matheson and her DI Henley series will be placed on the top of your auto-buy list.
