Empowering and Uplifting: Read Our Review of Bella the Brave by Rebel Wilson, illustrated by Annabel Tempest

Bella, be brave. Time to make a choice. Bella, be bold. Time to find your voice.

Bella has so much to say, but she’s just too shy. If only she could be more like her confident sister, Stella. Then one day Bella’s mum brings her to the local choir. Could it finally be Bella’s time to shine?

Bella is brave, Bella is bold. She just doesn’t know it yet. An empowering picture book about finding your voice from one of Australia’s best-loved stars, Rebel Wilson.

Rebel Wilson is an Australian actor, writer and producer who has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after entertainers, endearing audiences worldwide with her distinct humour while championing new narratives for women. Bella the Brave is her debut book series for children.

Bella the Brave is realistic, uplifting, and empowering. I remember being just like Bella: shy and afraid to speak up – and sometimes I still have these feelings. This book is a powerful reminder that it’s okay to be quiet and have shy moments, but you can still flourish. Confidence is your ally, and Bella proves that all it takes is channelling your inner confidence for you to shine like a star.

Wilson was inspired by her own shyness as a child. And her huge success in the entertainment industry proves that you’re capable of coming out of your shell while staying true to who you are. My favourite part of the book is when Wilson describes that the butterflies in your tummy might never go away, but that they don’t need to; butterflies are beautiful, so why shouldn’t they stay?

Illustrator Anabel Tempest’s passion for bright, bold books full of colourful patterns clearly shines in Bella the Brave, showing Bella’s different emotions: her shyness in class, her sadness at home and, ultimately, her surge of confidence. I particularly liked how specific pages focused just on Bella against a white background, placing a special visual emphasis on Bella’s feelings.

Bella the Brave is the ideal read for readers aged 3+. Whether your kid is shy, bold, quiet or brave, there’s so much to take away from this incredible picture book! I’ll be recommending it to everyone I know.
