Hilariously Witty: Read Our Review of Funny Kid Catastrophe by Matt Stanton

Funny Kid is the mega-bestselling series from author-illustrator Matt Stanton that has everyone laughing! This middle-grade series debuted as the #1 Australian Kids’ Book and has legions of fans across the globe. He has published a number of bestselling picture books, including There Is a Monster Under My Bed Who Farts, Pea + Nut! and the Bored series.

Now, Stanton returns with Funny Kid Catastrophe, book #11 in the super-popular Funny Kid series… and get ready to laugh your head off!

Every kid wants to laugh, but Max is the boy who can make it happen. He’s also the boy who absolutely, definitely, does not under any circumstances want a cat. So why did Mum and Dad just bring one home? Max is the funny kid but now this cat, who he names Catastrophe, is here to ruin his life!

The Funny Kid series sits at an unrivalled level of hilarity, with wit and fun laced throughout, and Funny Kid Catastrophe is no exception. Max’s hilarity is brought to the forefront from the opening pages, and that’s before the story even starts! This addition is a gateway for new readers to get immersed in the Funny Kid world, while also reminding old readers of Max’s antics. It’s personal and inviting.

I’ll admit, my heart sank when page one revealed this is the end of Funny Kid… until I read page two. In typical Max humour, we learn that Max is referring to himself as ‘first kid’ now that his mum is running for mayor of Redhill.

While Max daydreams about limousines and bodyguards, his parents have surprised him with his least favourite pet… a cat! And so begins a chaotic and catastrophic (pun intended) adventure navigating school, the responsibility of a pet Max refuses to like and campaigning for his mum to become mayor.

Cat bums, cat claws, ticklish cats, piano-playing cats, cats that will run away and cats that won’t (oh, and a jealous Duck in a toilet jacuzzi) are just some of the things in store for Max and his friends in this Funny Kid adventure! On a deeper level, Funny Kid Catastrophe explores the power of social media and learning to be open-minded – and what you can achieve when you put the two together.

With distinctive illustrations and storytelling that will have you laughing for days, this book is ideal for readers aged 7+. The heartwarming yet hilarious ending left me reeling for more, but in the meantime, you can find me laughing as I re-read my favourite Funny Kid books.
