Impactful Storytelling: Read Our Review of Welcome to Our Country: Back on Country by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing, illustrated by David Hardy

Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing and illustrator David Hardy have been a busy team this past year. The third book in their Welcome to Our Country series, Back on Country, is out now.

Former AFL star and Australian of the Year Goodes was inspired to collaborate on a picture book series with journalist Laing and Barkindji illustrator Hardy. This series beginning with book #1, Somebody’s Land, and book #2, Ceremony has started important conversations about Australian history and Indigenous heritage for a wide audience of Indigenous and non-Indigenous kids alike. The beautifully illustrated, accessible and educational books have been critically acclaimed, with Somebody’s Land winning the 2022 ABIA Picture Book of the Year.

Back on Country is filled with words from the Adnyamathanha language, the language of Goodes’ family and ancestors. Inside the front and back covers is an illustrated glossary of words, which is a helpful aid for readers. Hardy’s illustrations are vivid and evocative, bringing this story to dazzling life.

The book follows Lucy and David during their first time back on Country. They meet their cousins and Elders, see special places, learn local language and hear stories as old as time. Goodes was inspired by his own trips back to Adnyamathanha Country in the Flinders Ranges region of South Australia with his mother. In the book, Lucy and David meet their Andyini (nanna) and explore the local region, learning all about their ancient customs along the way.

It’s fascinating to learn about returning to Country and how this is such an important practice to remain connected to culture and family. The Adnyamathanha nation is one of hundreds of Indigenous nations that exist across Australia. Back on Country is a fantastic way for kids to learn about the diversity, vibrancy and continuing strength of Indigenous cultures that have existed here for tens of thousands of years.

This is an ideal read for children aged 4+, one that is informative and valuable. All Australian families should be reading this fantastic series from Goodes, Laing and Hardy.
