If you don’t like this series you can BITE ME. Jawsome is awesome.
Something FISHY is going on in Chumville…
By day, Finley and his mates are ordinary shark kids. But by night, they are secretly the super-famous rock band JAWSOME!
But not everything is cruisy. Can Jawsome get to the bottom of an ocean of shady shark-nanigans while keeping their secret identities watertight?
With fabulous illustrations on every page, non-stop adventure and lots of laughs, Jawsome is perfect for emerging readers (and shark enthusiasts of all ages)!
R.J. Timmis is an award-winning author-illustrator who hails from the Gold Coast. Fitting for a long-term resident of the Sunshine State, Jawsome isn’t her first foray into wonderfully watery worlds for kids – you may recognise her as the author of the fantastic MerTales series, which BR Kids readers loved.
Jawsome incorporates many of the elements that made the MerTales series such a hit. Timmis is a master at combining bite-sized snippets of text with engaging illustrations into an engaging and accessible story, perfect for reluctant, emerging or easily distracted readers! There are also tons of fun facts about sea creatures. They’re so authentic to the story, kids won’t even realise they’re getting a lesson in biology!
But while MerTales didn’t shy away from glitter and sparkle, Jawsome is decidedly more hardcore and action-packed. While there’s still plenty of diversity and nuance in the cast of characters, don’t expect this story to be all shells and pearls. Jawsome is a ROCK band after all!
My favourite aspect of Timmis’ writing has to be her knack for puns. Jawsome is packed with shark-tastic language that kids and adults alike will get a kick out of! So, while the book is definitely geared towards independent reading, you won’t bemoan any requests to join in.
Just like its rocking namesake band, this clever new series is destined for greatness! Jawsome is an obvious choice for any shark lovers and aspiring marine biologists out there, but it’s also a fantastic read for a general audience. The simple but compelling plotline teaches kids aged 6+ about friendship, cooperation, problem-solving and resilience. Dive in now!
