Powerful and Timely: Read Our Review of The Trees by Victor Steffensen, Illustrated by Sandra Steffensen

Victor Steffensen is an Indigenous writer, filmmaker, musician and consultant applying traditional knowledge values in a contemporary context. He is a descendant of the Tagalaka people through his mother’s connections from the Gulf Country of north Queensland.

Steffensen’s bestselling adult book Fire Country was a huge hit. Following its success, in 2022 we introduced BR Kids readers to Steffensen’s picture book, Looking After Country with Fire, which explains Aboriginal burning practices for children. You can watch our Facebook Live event with him here.

Now, the bestselling author returns with The Trees, his second picture book for children. Take a walk with Uncle Kuu in The Trees, a picture book about caring for Country and respect for Indigenous knowledge.

Looking after the trees is important for keeping Country happy and healthy. First Nations People have cared for the trees on Country for thousands of years. In return, the trees look after the people and provide them with gifts of seeds, flowers, wood and more. This creates the balance between giving and taking from the land.

Enchanting and informative, The Trees is a powerful and timely story to help future generations manage our landscapes and ensure that they thrive. The picture book highlights positive and uplifting topics about tribes, the connection between flora and fauna, the special healing powers of trees’ roots, and more. But Steffensen also doesn’t shy away from deeper topics of deforestation, extinction, and the consequences of disobeying the lores of the land. In all, these subject matters are tackled with care and passion, Steffensen never once wavering from compelling storytelling – even the most reluctant readers will be consistently engaged.

Special mention needs to be made of Sandra Steffensen’s vivid and immersive illustrations. From the lush greens in rainforest Country to the muted tones in the land of hurt trees, it’s clear each line, colour and drawing is intentional, showcasing poignant meanings at the turn of each page. There’s so much to learn and absorb from this picture book.

At the back of the book, you’ll find lyrics to a song written by author Victor Steffensen with the title, ‘We are the Trees’, and a QR code to watch the song’s YouTube video. The Trees also offers some tips for how kids can help care for trees, too. It’s fun, engaging and interactive.

The Trees is the perfect stimulating read for the upcoming festive and summer reading periods. We recommend it for children aged 5+.
