Your Preview Verdict: The Concierge by Abby Corson

I suppose it would be fitting to explain that I am talking into a dictaphone and the lovely Helen will be typing out my story for you to read. She will have a certain amount of creative control—sorting out moments when I get a bit tongue-tied or slightly muddled—but I have told her to leave in as much as possible, so as not to miss any of the important bits. This is my account of the Cavengreen Hotel murder, best we get that bit in early on.

The peaceful setting of Cavengreen Hotel has been shattered by a shocking murder. Hector Harrow, the hotel’s concierge, has been accused and is determined to clear his name.

Hector enlists the aid of Helen, a retired publisher, to document the shocking crime that has unfolded, with the intention of publishing a truthful account.

Amid interruptions from a nosy journalist and the egotistical antics of the hotel’s new owner, American Dave, Helen works tirelessly to keep Hector focused on finishing his book.

As suspicions fall on different guests and one makes a shocking confession, Hector must navigate a web of secrets to uncover the truth.

The initial sentence of this book captivates the reader. Then you meet Hector, who in my opinion is basically my grandfather telling me a story about a hotel he called his second home. As I was reading this book, I pictured myself with my grandad, sitting in the family room, cups of tea in our hands as I stared in awe, wanting more and more of this story. This beautifully written book is a delightful weekend read, perfectly complemented by a comforting cuppa. The author’s ability to evoke a range of emotions towards the characters is remarkable; from endearing fondness to frustration and annoyance towards certain individuals, readers are deeply invested in the unfolding story. As someone who typically avoids murder mysteries, this book has sparked a newfound interest, compelling me to eagerly devour each page in anticipation of uncovering the truth behind the mystery. If you haven’t yet delved into this captivating story, I highly recommend doing so; it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. Angelique, VIC, 5 Stars

I absolutely loved Abby Corson’s quirky debut novel The Concierge. Such an entertaining story related by the endearing Hector through voice recordings by his friend Helen, this is a fabulous cozy armchair murder mystery full of colourful characters and unexpected twists set in a gorgeous country hotel. I loved every minute and would highly recommend it. I wonder what Abby Corson will do next? Thanks to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for the opportunity to read and review The Concierge. This is an entertaining story about Hector Harrow, a concierge at an exclusive hotel. Hector has had a sad and tragic past which has a profound influence on his present life. His future is also rapidly changing and this is also having an influence on his present. The hotel is full of intriguing and quirky characters who Hector interacts with on a daily basis. There is lots of drama, with a takeover by new management, a wedding and The Murder. All of these things have a profound effect on Hector and he does his best to cope with all the goings on, and he does this by writing a book about the murder! Lisa, QLD, 5 Stars

Thanks firstly to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for gifting me this in exchange for an honest review. Wow! I absolutely loved this book. I love a great thriller read and this was truly amazing. I was captivated from the start by Hector Harrow’s story – the concierge of Hotel Cavengreen himself. Hector has been accused of murder and wants to tell his story so the truth can be known. He dictates whilst his friend Helen – the retired publisher – helps the book come to life. A few twists and turns along the way and it finished in a way I certainly didn’t expect. There are no spoilers here from me, only my strong opinion that everyone who loves a thriller read needs to pick this up and give it a go! I can’t wait to read what Abby Corson writes next. Thank you so much again! Amanda, VIC, 5 Stars

Hector Harrow, has worked at the luxurious Cavengreen Hotel for over 50 years as a concierge who will do the utmost to keep the wealthy guests happy and tend to their needs. He narrates The Concierge; his voice tells the story behind a murder, and a very intense investigation. Things take a turn when Henry is called to a guest’s room, to find a dead body lying on the floor. The guests of the hotel including the wedding party, which is locked down in the hotel during the police investigation of the murder. We delve into Henry’s memories, views and the events at the hotel around the time of the murder as narrates the story and as he attempts to solve the murder and also clear his name. Henry was such a quirky character, and his storytelling was such fun to read. Abby Corson’s writing is engaging and an interesting take on crime fiction. It left me guessing who was murdered and who did it. Teresa, VIC, 5 Stars

The Concierge by Abby Corson is a delightful whodunit set in the Caverngreen Hotel and told by Hector Harrow, the hotel’s concierge. Hector tells the story into a dictaphone so Helen, a retired publisher, can help to produce a book about the murder. The book has many twists and turns and the ending is a surprise. A thoroughly enjoyable book. Gai, NSW, 5 Stars

I so enjoyed Hector’s unique voice! This was a fun read, with a well-drawn setting, some very clever meta references to the book writing and publishing process, and a lead character who really came to life for me. I really enjoyed getting to know Hector, learning about his past (even though it had dark elements) and how he lives with OCD. Finishing the book, it’s hard to believe that he doesn’t actually exist in the real world! In fact, I was so enamored of his personality and the way he related his story, that the actual mystery became secondary for me. His musings on loneliness and his delight at the book’s cover were beautifully written. Be aware, while this is a cosy style mystery, there are some nasty characters in here—I found some of their antics genuinely upsetting and frustrating. Poor Hector had a *lot* to cope with. My one disappointment is that there wasn’t a serious comeuppance for those people. But maybe the author has further plans for Hector and his antagonists—I would definitely read that! Lisa, QLD, 5 Stars

I fell in love with the main character, Hector with in the first few pages. His quirkiness, his old views of the world, and the way he lives with his routines resonated with me. The book is written in first person, with great detail explaining the plot of the lives of his work mates, the people who stayed at the hotel, the rude American owner and of course the murder. This book made laugh, frustrated by the treatment of Hector, smile at the care of some of his work colleagues. But the big twist at the end surprised me so much that I sat there shaking my head, saying no, that can’t be right! I would recommend this book, so worth owning and reading! It was fabulous. Sandra, WA, 5 Stars

Hector Harrow is 73 and has worked at Cavengreen Hotel since he was 16. Now, with a change of ownership, he is able to detail and witness a big event. Hector gives great detail and insight how he writes his book. This is a cosy mystery and very easy to read and enjoy. Thank you to Better Reading for the copy to read and review. Tianne, NSW, 5 Stars

What a fun book! I love mystery novels, but this one was, well, “novel”. Hector, the narrator has a conversational style reminiscent of Joyce from the Thursday Murder Club. He is loveable and a bit flummoxed by some aspects of contemporary society, especially technology. The murder at the heart of the story ends in a most delicious twist and the presentation of the narrative, as Hector writing a book about his experience discovering a body in the hotel where he was concierge, was rather unique. I will certainly be recommending this to all my Richard Osman-reading friends and will proudly put it in my school library, without worry that it contains gratuitous sex, violence or bad language. (There is a little bit of violence – a murder – and the odd cuss-word, but only vague references to sex and infidelity.) Definitely PG-friendly. Hopefully there is more to come from this author. Heidi, VIC, 5 Stars

Was it Professor Plum with a dagger in the dining room? Or was it Hector Harrow with a revolver in the Hotel lobby? The Concierge – a whodunnit with a twist! This murder mystery unfolds from the perspective of Hector Harrow, the concierge at the Cavengreen Hotel. Hector is an eccentric, older gentleman, whose point of view is charming and funny as he navigates a world that is far more modern than he is. There are characters you love, including Hector, who explains how his childhood and early life has affected him yet shaped him into the man he is today. And there are characters you despise and are constantly hoping they will get what they deserve. The novel keeps you guessing. Just as you think you may know who the murderer is, the story takes another twist. If you liked Nita Prose’s The Maid or Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, then you will love this book. Kirsten, NSW, 5 Stars

Well done to the author Abby Corson on her first book. I loved it as it was so different to the usual crime thriller in that the story was being told by one of the key suspects in the murder. The book contains a good mix of unusual and complex characters and certainly has a great twist at the end. A most enjoyable book which was hard to put down as I was very keen to reveal the murderer. I’m sure readers everywhere will love this book. Karen, VIC, 5 Stars

The Concierge by Abby Corson was such an enjoyable read. The main protagonist, Hector Harrow, has been a concierge for more than 50 years in the lavish English countryside hotel called the Cavengreen Hotel. What begins as a seemingly routine day for Hector becomes a day and week turned upside down and spiraling out of control. He is accused of an awful murder and must deal with a hotel under lock down until a detective can get a grip on what has happened and who is actually responsible for the murder. A hotel filled with dubious guests and peculiar staff also adds a complex puzzle of whodunit. It is written in a way that Hector is the narrator as he is looking back at the event and trying to tell his version of the story via a dictaphone to a writer friend. I found Hector a very likeable character and loved his quirks. I rarely pick up murder mysteries, but this was a great opportunity for a change in genre for me and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves to be immersed in solving a murder mystery novel. Julie, VIC, 5 Stars

I just loved The Concierge. The characters were well described and easy for me to visualise, even if I didn’t like some of them (haha). The Cavengreen Hotel was a fabulous background for the story to unfold in and had an “Agatha Christie” feel about it. The story was narrated by 73-year-old Hector who has worked at the hotel his entire adult life, currently in the role of the concierge. Initially, I thought the plot seemed a fairly simplistic murder mystery. More fool me! Abby Corson wove an amazing web of intrigue and was full of continual surprises. I was completely hooked! An outstanding debut novel and completely worthy of my 5 stars! Kim, ACT, 5 Stars

A cosy, fun and unique read that was very engaging. I loved the narrative style of this book and instantly fell in love with the main character Hector, who made you feel like cosying up for a cuppa in your dressing gown! I thought I had guessed the killer until the ultimate twist at the end. Well done! Evelyn, NSW, 5 Stars

What a brilliant read. It had me engaged from the beginning. I loved the main character Hector Harrow, who just went to his job of 50 years as the concierge at The Cavengreen Hotel, one day and became embroiled in a murder investigation in the hotel. The story is told as Hector recounts his experience into a dictaphone for his friend Helen to transcribe with the view to publishing a book. The story is set in the historic Cavengreen Hotel and a quirky, cosy and mysterious which is an easy, enjoyable read. It has great characters, some likeable and some not, who bring great depth to the story. I was kept guessing until the end even though I thought I had an inkling who the murderer was – I was wrong. The Concierge is highly recommended. Helen, NSW, 5 Stars

Hector Harrow has worked at The Cavengreen Hotel since he was 16. Now at 73 he never thought he could put together a book with the last event before the hotel changes hands and he retires. A cosy mystery to enjoy and watch twists and turns as Hector details the story. To be honest you can easily read this and easily be hooked. Such a heart warming story. Tianne, NSW, 5 Stars

Just before a wedding at an exclusive hotel a murder occurs. Hector is the elderly concierge at the hotel and he tells us the story. Sometimes staying on topic and at other times rambling. He is a wonderful character and really makes all the others come alive. there are many twists and turns and just when everything makes sense it doesn’t! I’d be happy to listen to Hector all day. A really fabulous read. Kerry, WA, 5 Stars

Wonderful debut novel. A gentle, humorous cosy crime read, set in a luxurious hotel in the Yorkshire Dales. The setting and characters in the novel, are described beautifully and you feel you are right there with them. Hector Harrow “The Concierge” was my favourite character, a charming old-school gentleman, who has spent a lifetime helping people and is bewildered and shocked at the crime that has occurred. Unexpected, original twist at the end. An entertaining read for fans of Benjamin Stevenson, Agatha Christie and Richard Osman. Jane, NSW, 5 Stars

The Concierge is a great debut novel by Abby Corson and is a murder mystery set in the Yorkshire Dales and takes place at the luxury hotel Cavengreen. Things have started to change since the hotel was bought by American investors and staff are very unsettled. Hector Harrow is the 73-year-old concierge who has worked there for 50 years working his way up to the job he loves. The hotel and co-workers are his life. Hector tells the story as he dictates the details to a retired publisher Helen. He is determined to clear his name. Through his telling of the story, we learn of the history of the employees as well as the guests many who were attending a wedding at the hotel. The Detective who is handling the case has not allowed anyone to leave the hotel and everyone is a suspect. This is a very enjoyable story with many quirky characters and a lot of twists and turns, a book I did not want to put down. Thank you to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for an advanced copy. Marg, VIC, 5 Stars

A book written in a style I have never read before but after a few pages, couldn’t put it down with twists and turns throughout and an unexpected ending. A great page-turner that shows the complexities of human beings. Joan, VIC, 5 Stars

This is a great read! It had a suspenseful plot and well-developed, deep characters. It was intriguing and mysterious and everything you could want in a murder mystery. I loved the character Hector and the last chapter was particularly fantastic. Julia, WA, 5 Stars

What an unusual book The Concierge is. It is written from the perspective of seventy-three-year-old Hector Harrow, the concierge at the upmarket old-fashioned Cavengreen Hotel. Hector unfortunately discovers a body in suite seven and becomes the main suspect of the murder. The hotel is put into lockdown with no one allowed to leave for several days until a new suspect is found. After the lockdown, Hector is encouraged by a friend who is a retired publisher to write a book of his experiences. Hector talks into a Dictaphone so that his friend Helen can type up his story. I found the characters well-defined; I could visualize them all even though some were not likeable. Merry, TAS, 5 Stars

It was an absolute joy to read this murder mystery. Set in the charming luxury hotel, Cavengreen, in the Yorkshire Dales, with a 73-year-old protagonist named Hector Harrow, this tale is never boring. The murder has already occurred and Hector is determined to clear his name. He is collaborating with a retired publisher, Helen, to document the events that took place and hopefully clear his name. Helen hopes to get a book deal out of it. Corson fills the narrative with whimsical observations (thanks Hector) and unexpected twists and turns. The characters are believable, some a little quirky and in some cases easy to dislike, while all contributing to the mystery. This book is innocently engaging right to the end, an end that is a clever surprise. It would make a wonderful gift. Loved it. Mara, NSW, 5 Stars

The Concierge by Abby Corson was a delightful read, that I was lucky enough to read on a beach in Thailand, perfect holiday reading. The story centres around a luxury hotel and a concierge, Hector, who has worked there for over 50 years. A murder occurs in the hotel, and it is up to Hector to prove his innocence and assist the inept detective to find out who the killer is. Hector, with the help of his friend Helen narrates the story and introduces the reader to the guests who are staying in the hotel at the time of the murder, and therefore our list of suspects. The book is warm and humorous, while at the same time having enough twists and turns to keep you interested and engaged. I for one did not predict the ending. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would very much recommend it. Kelly, VIC, 5 Stars

Brilliant! A fast-paced, easy-to-follow murder mystery set in a luxurious high-end hotel, narrated by the 73-year-old concierge. I adored Hector. I loved his loyalty and his quirkiness and his relationships with the other characters in the book. The ending twist was fantastic and overall I thought it was a great debut for the author – I’m looking forward to reading more from her. Celia, SA, 5 Stars

If you like Sally Hepworth, you’re going to love Abby Corson! We join the concierge as he recounts the murder at Cavengreen Hotel, a luxury hotel in the Yorkshire Dales. As Hector navigates the current day interruptions he introduces us to the staff and guests who were at Cavengreen on that fateful date. Corson expertly weaves Hector’s memories of past events with the current happenings to bring us the full story of Cavengreen. Up against a detective who is looking for a quick resolution, Hector and his colleagues must work together to find the real killer before someone is wrongly convicted. Pasts will be uncovered and futures changed as this unlikely band of sleuths search their beloved Cavengreen for answers. This is a fantastic debut from Corson, a delightful read that I couldn’t put down. Don’t be fooled by the 73-year-old protagonist, the last chapter will leave your head spinning! Amy, NSW, 5 Stars

From the subtle calming cover with pastel tones, to the way of writing from ‘the concierge’s’ point of view – this book had me captivated. A real whodunnit right until the end, that will have you suspecting ‘all’ characters in this book. If you love solving murder mysteries, this is your book! Tap one. Tap two. Tap three. Rachael, NSW, 5 Stars

The Concierge is a delightful, cozy mystery that skillfully weaves a captivating narrative filled with unexpected twists and turns. The novel introduces readers to the charming setting of Cavengreen Hotel, disrupted by a shocking murder that implicates the hotel’s concierge, Hector Harrow. The story unfolds as Hector determined to clear his name, enlists the help of the retired publisher, Helen, to document the unfolding crime. The author creates a fantastic cast of characters, each contributing to the intrigue and suspense of the plot. The debut novel skillfully balances the mystery elements with a cozy atmosphere, keeping readers on their toes until the end. The dynamic between Hector and Helen adds depth to the narrative, and the inclusion of quirky personalities, like the nosy journalist and the egotistical hotel owner, enhances the overall charm of the story. In The Concierge, readers will find a well-crafted mystery that engages from start to finish, making it a delightful debut. Charmaine, QLD, 5 Stars

What a page-turner. Congratulations, Abby. The book is filled with more twists and turns than the Zig Zag Railway. It is Agatha Christie meets Agatha Raisen meets Shakespeare and Hathaway meets Upstairs Downstairs, all rolled into one novel. I could not put the book down. Incidentally, I read most of on a day trip from home to Melbourne on a V/Line bus and train service. The characters are the type you could meet in a hotel or at a wedding or down the street. Natural with a good injection of humour. I am sure this book will be a best seller. Cheryl, VIC, 5 Stars

This is a account of the story of a peaceful setting of the Caverngreen Hotel, who has been rocked by a shocking murder. Hector Harrow is the concierge of the hotel and has been accused of the shocking murder. Hector has to clear his name so he enlists the help of Helen who is a retired publisher. He gets Helen to write a documentation of the murder and publish it so the truth will come out. What a brilliant read. Suspenseful and a great murder mystery. Noeleen, WA, 5 Stars

A well-written book with well-developed characters and a plot that will keep you guessing till the end. Cassie, TAS, 4 Stars

Such a fun easy to read book; kept me intrigued the whole way through. Nicky, NSW, 4 Stars

A fantastic murder mystery told from the accused’s point of view, the concierge of a five star hotel. Faced with ageism and the prospect of losing his job to an iPad, Hector struggles to clear his name while the guests that were there, come forward with different stories. I loved how all characters were so suspicious that I couldn’t work out who was the murderer or why until the very end. Amanda, VIC, 4 Stars

Told in first person and directly to the reader, Hector tells his story of a murder at the Cavengreen, where he has worked for many years now. Easy, light reading with plot twists to keep you guessing to the end. Enjoyable read. Laura, NSW, 4 Stars

Although it’s never easy to start a book that deals with unresolved murder, this one was a little gem from the very first page. Narrated as a story the main character is piecing together, it’s a book that entices you to keep turning the pages and keeps you wondering if you can predict correctly how the mysterious story unfolds. With plenty of twists, intrigue and mystery to keep you wanting to read the next chapter, and the next, and the next… The main character is very likeable, and would no doubt be a fun companion. He adds a witty element to his narrations, his eccentricity beams through and builds the story, until you end up wondering how a murder mystery can be so humorous to read. There are lots of other quirky characters, too, some likeable while others less so, yet overall they make the story plot a humorous read indeed. The writing style is reminiscent of the author’s English origin, and the sense of humour shines throughout the story; it’s there in the descriptions of characters, in their individuality, and the tender descriptions of the places and settings. An engaging and entertaining read! Margareta, SA, 4 Stars

Abby’s Corson’s debut novel, The Concierge, offers all the elements of a typical crime/mystery novel, but with a refreshing approach to the narration. The setting of the novel is predominantly at the Cavengreen Hotel where protagonist and narrator Hector has worked diligently and faithfully for most of his life. However, when someone is murdered in the aftermath of an elaborate wedding, Hector’s professionalism, integrity and innocence are all called into question. The guests and staff are forced to remain within the hotel as the police investigate; and as their investigation moves at a glacial pace, Hector and his team begin their own investigation to uncover the killer. Hector’s narration takes place after these events as he tape records his recollections, working with his friend and editor Helen, to release his own book version of events before the trial of the accused is concluded. Hector is a sympathetic character and readers will find it easy to feel affronted by his treatment at the hands of the police, indulged guests and the hotel’s new owner. Corson has woven a few twists into the plot to keep the reader on tenterhooks until the novel’s conclusion. This is an enjoyable and recommended read. Rebecca, VIC, 4 Stars

This was a very fun read, a very enjoyable debut novel. Hector is the concierge at a luxury hotel, where he takes pride in taking care of wealthy guests. The hotel goes into lockdown after the murder of one of his guests and this is the “after the event” recollection of Hector. A real page-turner, you’ll not want to put it down to find out who did it and why. Thank you to Better Reading for this book to read and review. Nicky, QLD, 4 Stars

This novel was a slow paced, cosy murder mystery. The characters were so well developed, especially the main protagonist Hector, the concierge, that I liked spending time with them. Hector’s quirks made him so believable – his three taps! I really felt for him as he was suspected of the murder of a guest in his hotel. Also his friend Fiona, the manager of reception, is well fleshed out and likeable. She helps Hector whenever she can and is bossy and clever. Together they are stuck in the hotel with the other guests as Hector begins to investigate. The big reveal at the end was a surprise to me, but I enjoyed the journey getting there. Kristy, NSW, 4 Stars

The Cavengreen Hotel located in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales is the setting for this highly entertaining and addictive book. Hector Harrow has been the concierge here since his early work life gradually working his way to this prestigious position. He’s the heartbeat of the hotel and does his best to provide all the guests with any requirements. A wedding is held at the hotel, but the mood is spoilt with a murder. The new bumbling police investigator has much trouble ascertaining the murderer, despite all the staff and guests being kept at the hotel for four days. Hector and his coworkers take it upon themselves to try and find the murderer. Helen, Hector’s literary friend, encourages him to write a best seller with her help as a ghost writer. The reader will be taken on many twists and turns with this book, but certainly never a dull moment. Lisa, SA, 4 Stars

This was a fun book to read. Hector, the concierge, is a real charmer. The first person narrative and ‘live creation’ of this book was a quirky interesting method of delivery. As you would expect from a crime novel the plot has many red herrings and twists along with a cast of likely suspects. As a debut novel it’s highly entertaining and successful and I’m sure we will be seeing more from Abby Corson. Tundra, ACT, 4 Stars

I loved this book. It really felt like someone was just chatting with me and telling me a story, not me reading it. Loved the twist and end result. Highly recommended. Tina, SA, 4 Stars

A very different read. It’s like slipping your feet into a comfortable pair of slippers. The main character, Hector, is a dedicated concierge, a loyal employee, who’s liked by everyone, so why would he commit a murder? Hector is insightful, and a true judge of character. This is apparent as he uses a dictaphone to write a book about the murder. I thoroughly enjoyed this, the characters are rich and the story kept me guessing. Jacqueline, WA, 4 Stars

This book was charming with its narrator stealing the show. A twisty ending adds to the appeal. Get swept up in the story as Hector recalls the events surrounding a murder in the hotel where he is the long serving concierge. You will not regret it! Jane, VIC, 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this murder mystery – the perfect rainy weekend read. The Cavengreen Hotel is perfectly brought to life by Concierge Hector Harrow, ably helped by a well written assortment of characters. I wasn’t sure at first if the author’s technique of having Hector use a dictaphone to progress large portions of the story would work, but this definitely grew on me. Demolished this book in one rainy weekend. Looking forward to Abby Corson’s second book! Jennifer, QLD, 4 Stars

Reading this book felt like sitting down with Hector for a cuppa and a nice chat – which just happened to be about a murder! Never thought a murder mystery could be so cosy, or a suspect as huggable as a teddy bear. Thank you to Better Reading for the privilege of enjoying a preview copy. KB, SA, 4 Stars

First let me preface this review by saying I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a crime or mystery novel for the simple fact that I’m usually not drawn to them. However, when I read the blurb for The Concierge there was something about it that left me with a sense of intrigue and I can confidently say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite it being so different from my typical reads. I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed this book so much was the presentation. Following Hector’s journey while he records his story, on a dictaphone, to then be later transcribed and published, was a genius idea. Not to mention that I was so far off the right track the entire time I was reading that when it came to the ending I was shocked and pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone, whether you like crime novels or not! Fantastic read! And a big thank you to Better Reading for supplying me the with a copy to read. Aerin, NSW, 4 Stars

Hector is 73, the long serving concierge at The Cavengreen, an upmarket, genteel hotel where guests are welcomed, cosseted and cared for with excellent service and lovely facilities. Unfortunately, when things start to go wrong they really take a turn for the worse. Firstly, the hotel is being sold to an obnoxious American who may or may not replace Hector with an iPad. Secondly, a guest at the hotel is found murdered (by Hector, no less) while a wedding party is taking place. The novel consists of Hector’s retelling of the murder and its consequences. He is dictating the tale to Helen, a family friend, familiar with the publishing world who brings delicious cakes and keeps Hector on track when he starts to ramble. Told in the first person, the novel is well paced and the characters jump out from the page. There are twists and turns and endearing insights into Hector’s life. I enjoyed it as a fan of Agatha Christie and look forward to more from Abby Corson. Thanks to Better Reading for the preview copy. Lesley, QLD, 4 Stars

The book is written in first person. Hector is dictating it to a person/friend who is transcribing it into a book. The person is describing the staff and rooms of an luxurious hotel where a wedding was being held. An American Company has bought the hotel and is threatening to dismiss staff and replace with digital communication devices. The concierge has a tic – tapping his head when stressed or thinking. A murdered guest has been found by the concierge and the police try to blame him. Police treat the guests and staff poorly. A twist at the end reveals the true killer. Dianne, QLD, 4 Stars

The Concierge was a great little read. It kept my attention throughout, and had an entertaining tone. Skye, QLD, 4 Stars

A fun, cozy mystery with plenty of plots twists, right until the end. Great for anyone who likes an easy but intriguing read. I’d recommend for Agatha Cristy and Richard Osman fans. The book is written as a raw transcript of Hector as he dictates his version of the murder and trail. You are never entirely sure how reliable he is as a narrator. The style took a bit of getting used to but worked well. The Cavengreen Hotel and grounds are vividly set and there are plenty of quirky characters. However, only a few of the characters are well fleshed out. The book left me wondering what some of the characters would really be like, when not seen through Hector’s point of view. Katie, NSW, 4 Stars

What a delightful book. Thank you, Better Reading, for the opportunity to review The Concierge; I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator is a 73-year-old gentleman who has been witness to a murder within the hotel he works for. What unfolds kept me turning the pages to find out what happened. All the characters are fabulous, even the ones I hated. The author has done an excellent job in developing the story, and it is refreshing to read a book with a mature protagonist. When I first started, I wasn’t sure about the narrative style, but she nailed the first-person perspective. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a cozy mystery to read. Diana, QLD, 4 Stars

This was such a cute and easy read. I instantly connected with Hector, with his role as a concierge, his politeness, and his very grandfatherly vibe. Cavengreen Hotel sounds like a lovely place to visit, very posh with its personal service, limited capacity, and its placement. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through Hector’s memory of events and especially his depiction of the big, rude Texan guy. That little twist at the end was very neatly laid out, if only I had picked up all the crumbs! The Concierge is a delightful and easy read for anyone wanting something a little different. A big thank you to the team at @betterreadingau for sending this book to me for my honest review. Another wonderful book you have highlighted. Ali, TAS, 4 Stars

I found The Concierge to be an enjoyable, entertaining read. I struggled initially to sustain interest, but after persevering for a couple of chapters my interest was piqued and I was keen to keep reading to discover who the murderer was. The characters were developed enough to be interesting but I found a couple of them to be more like caricatures which was disappointing. Overall, a good, entertaining, unchallenging read. I enjoyed the first person narrative and the ending was a surprise. The main character, the concierge, was well developed and believable and I enjoyed following his retelling of events. Simone, VIC, 4 Stars

The Concierge tells a story of a murder in the upper class Caverngreen hotel through the eyes of Hector the hotel’s concierge. Sprinkled with clues, this book will keep you guessing to the very end. I found it to be an easy page turner written in a refreshing style. Marion, VIC, 4 Stars

This cosy mystery was written in a unique way that was very engaging. Immediately I felt Hector was a likeable narrator as he relayed from his perspective the circumstances of the murder in the hotel that is the central focus for the story. Hector has been the concierge of the (usually) peaceful luxury hotel for over 50 years and gets embroiled in this murder mystery, even at one point becoming the prime suspect. My interest was sustained as, via Hector’s storytelling, I got to know the other staff, the guests, and also some of Hector’s past and became more and more intrigued while trying to solve the mystery. I thought I knew the conclusion but this debut novelist had me fooled right to the end, which made this an enjoyable read. With thanks to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for the preview copy to review. Regina, NSW, 4 Stars

I absolutely loved Hector Harrow! Hector, a loyal long-term employee at the Cavengreen Hotel, is unwittingly accused of a brutal murder. The Concierge is narrated by the quirky and lovable Hector. The reader discovers that he is actually more intelligent than people suspect. This was a great read with a very unique narrator! KJ, QLD, 4 Stars

Hector (can I get you a brew?) Harrow, our narrator, is 73 and has loved working at the Cavengreen Hotel since he was boy. Suddenly his organised life is thrown into chaos by a takeover by American Dave and his team and by the murder of a guest, with Hector being the unfortunate concierge who finds the body. Enter Detective Raj, much discomfort and Hector’s growing determination to solve the case. This is a rather wonderful ‘closed circle mystery’ set in an old fashioned country hotel and Hector is a rather wonderful, seemingly forgetful, Yorkshire version of Poirot. With the help of his friends, Helen, Fiona and Potts, will he finish his book and expose the murderer before American Dave claims TV glory? Marlies, VIC, 4 Stars

I am a sucker for a cozy crime and The Concierge did not let me down! It is a delightful and intriguing tale, with a loveable narrator and a cast of colourful characters. Laura, VIC, 4 Stars

I enjoyed The Concierge and found the main character, Hector Harrow, an absolute delight. Written entirely in first person narrative which may not suit some readers, Hector’s descriptions of some of the less likeable hotel guests are laugh out loud funny. Highly recommended for readers who love a good cosy crime mystery with lots of humour, twists and turns. Peta, QLD, 4 Stars

The Concierge by Abby Corson follows the days before and after a brutal murder of a guest at the five star Cavengreen Hotel in West Yorkshire. Hector, the concierge, has worked here for over fifty-seven years and now finds himself implicated in a murder after finding the body. Enter the incompetent detective, Raj, the loudmouthed American Dave, the troublesome, rich and entitled twins, the alcoholic author and other staff and guests to complete the set for a twisty and engaging tale. Hector narrates the “true” story into a dictaphone for friend Helen to edit and type up into a book. It is an unusual style that leads to many observations by Hector and allows his personal opinions to be included asides to the tale. As the story progresses the reader slowly realises the warmth and integrity of Hector and his coworker Fiona. Along the lines of Agatha Christie and Richard Osman, there are many twists and a lot of humour. The final twist is quite a shock. Well worth a read. Thanks to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for my copy. Michael, ACT, 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book. At the beginning I was a bit worried that it wouldn’t be for me as the writing style was quite different, but as I kept reading and once I got into the rhythm I enjoyed it more, so if you are feeling like that stick with it. Reading this book made me feel like I was sitting with a friend who was telling me a story rather than being an outside observer of the story. My storytelling friend is Hector Harrow, he is the concierge of Cavengreen Hotel, a position he has held for 50+ years and is so much more than an employee at the luxury hotel, everything about Cavengreen is very dear to Hector. When chaos erupts in the form of a murder Hector’s life is thrown into a spin, we follow Hector in his quest to solve the murder while clearing his name as prime suspect. I found Hector to be a very likeable and endearing character with lots of quirks that made his life a bit more challenging. I changed my star rating a couple of times near the end, won’t say too much as I don’t want to give any spoilers, only to say that it went down to three then back to four at the end. This was a book I thought about in between reads which is always a good sign, I wanted to get back to see what was coming next. Thanks so much to Better Reading for the advanced copy, this was indeed an enjoyable read. Linda, VIC, 4 Stars

I very much enjoyed reading The Concierge by Abby Corson. The protagonist is a likeable character, especially in light of his childhood misfortunes, who takes the reader on a journey of cosy detective work in this clever murder mystery novel. The story develops slowly with just enough information to keep one interested and just when you think you have worked it all out… a twist no one saw coming! It was an enjoyable summer read and I’m looking forward to see more from Abby Corson in the future. Ewa, VIC, 4 Stars

I enjoyed reading this mystery as it has multiple times where the reader is lead astray including a false ending. As the main character Hector was writing the book (dictating it to be written up later) it provided a perspective that is not seen often in mysteries and I liked the unusual style of narration from the main character. There are some truly horrible characters in this book including a pair of twins and American Dave who hate Hector but thankfully Hector is likeable and loyal to his career and his friends whom he loves. As this is the first novel by Abby Corson, I will be looking forward to any other mysteries that the author comes out with. Elyce, VIC, 4 Stars

This story twisted so many times, I got dizzy. Once I got past the way it was written, it was a page-turner. I never suspected the killer at all. Brilliant story, told with great details, so you could imagine the scene at the Cavengreen Hotel. Well done to the author on this suspenseful story. Fully enjoyed the journey that this book took me to up in the Yorkshire Dales. Leeanne, NSW, 4 Stars

The Concierge was an interesting book to read. It was in a completely different format from most books, but, once I got used to it I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were so well drawn that I could see them in my minds eye and the setting of the whole book was beautifully described too. The book had me guessing all the way through and just when I thought I had it all figured out there was another twist. This book is what I would call a “cosy murder mystery”. Well done Abby Corson on your first book – I look forward to reading more books by the same author. Rhonda, VIC, 4 Stars

The Concierge is a delightful, cosy mystery. It’s set in the luxurious Cavengreen Hotel in the Yorkshire countryside. The story is narrated by Hector Harrow, the hotel’s long-serving, unassuming, dedicated concierge, who finds himself suspected of murder and his regulated, peaceful life is turned upside down as he struggles to prove his innocence. First time author Abby Corson uses Hector telling his side of the story and dictating the facts to a publisher friend as a clever plot device to let us in… The reader gets a detailed account of the hotel guests, staff, friends, local police and almost everyone is a suspect. Hector’s backstory and personal life is slowly revealed. A fun, enjoyable read! Cheryl, NSW, 4 Stars

The Concierge is a quirky whodunit debut novel from Australian author Abby Corson. Having the novel written in the first person narrative took a bit to get used to, but it worked really well for the storyline and perfectly suited the character of 73-year-old charming ex-concierge Hector. Corson does a great job of creating characters you immediately love or loathe, and I changed back and forth between them trying to work out who the murderer was. I felt it was a little slow at times, and other times had so much detail to take in, but interesting and engaging enough to keep me wondering how this murder mystery was going to pan out. Laura, WA, 3 Stars

This is an original book with one of the most endearing main characters I have encountered for some time. I fell in love with Hector immediately, and from the outset I was on his side. The setting and plot are reminiscent of a modern Agatha Christie mystery. Just when you think it’s all tied up the twist comes – and it’s not one that I picked! Hannah, SA, 3 Stars

I enjoy a light murder mystery with other things going on within the plot. I liked all the characters and my favourite was probably Fiona. I liked her no nonsense style and unerring support of the main character. I thought the story was a bit slow. But enjoyed all the tangents and what the main character would call waffling. The ending surprised me, which was nice. Georgina, QLD, 3 Stars

Thanks to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for a copy of this cosy mystery by Abby Corson. Hector Harrow is the elderly concierge at the very upmarket Cavendon Hotel. Hector has worked here since a sixteen year old lad. He is working at the hotel as a wedding takes place and during this frenetic weekend, a murder also takes place. Hector is the unfortunate staff member who discovers the body. The hotel is put into lockdown while the investigation takes place and Hector is a prime suspect. He determines to find who the murderer really is by recording events on a dictaphone which will become a book and hopefully, clear his name. An easy read that I think it would make a good mini series in the style of Midsummer Murders. Karan, VIC, 3 Stars

This book is like a day in the life of Hector Harrow, 74-year-old concierge at the Cavengreen Hotel in Yorkshire. Hector recounts the days, the guests and his life leading up to the murder. He then takes us through the events investigating the murder. Hector is a quirky, lovely old man. I didn’t expect the twists and that ending at all. It was fun to read something different. This is a different kind of writing style where Hector is sharing all his thoughts and information into a dictaphone for his friend Helen to type into a book. As Hector is narrating, I feel like this book would be a great audio book. Thank you @ultimopress and @betterreadingau for sending me a copy in exchange for my honest review. Marie, NSW, 3 Stars

The Yorkshire Dales luxury hotel setting is full of old-world charm and quirky characters. Some likeable, some not. Hector, the concierge, is likeable, trustworthy, although occasionally vague – his conversational narrative felt like we were sitting down for a cuppa and a chat. I liked him from the start, more so after learning of his childhood abuse and OCD. His attention to detail is impeccable. So are his lists about the clients. Useful in his role as amateur sleuth when a murder occurs and he struggles to prove his innocence. He’s writing a book, too, with ex-publisher friend Helen’s encouragement and help. Detective Raj’s failure to comply with PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act) jarred with me, but the conversational style soon swept me back into the story. I worked out who the murderer was early on, but was intrigued to learn how and why. There’s a genuine warmth and respect between the hotel’s staff and I loved the development of the friendship between Hector and Fiona. She’s got Hector’s back when accusations start and American Dave and entourage bully Hector. An easy, fun read. Thank you Better Reading and Ultimo for my ARC for review. Pamela, QLD, 3 Stars

The Concierge is the debut novel by Abby Corson. Best described as a cosy mystery, it involves the concierge of Cavengreen hotel, Hector Harrow, working to solve a murder which occurs in a suite at the hotel. It is told mostly through Hector recording his memories of that time to be turned into a book. For me, this book slightly misses the mark. I found the ‘recording’ sometimes disrupted the flow of the story, and it seemed a little contrived. The basic story is good however, and well told. Karen, VIC, 3 Stars

The story was told from Hector’s perspective as though he was recording the story onto a dictaphone. While I thought this was clever, I thought it added a lot of unnecessary waffle to the story, detracting from the main storyline. However, it was a good way to jump between past and present and even played a part in how they finally caught and revealed the killer. The cover is eye-catching, but while there were twists and turns as you would expect from a murder mystery, it wasn’t the most gripping one I have read. It was an easy but slow-paced read. Laura, NSW, 3 Stars

Hector Harrow is the long-serving concierge at the luxurious Cavengreen Hotel. It is a place of elegance and refinement until, that is, a murder is committed. The hotel is plunged into lockdown and that is when the reader gets a sense of the “players” in this twisty whodunit. There is a varied collection of personalities, many with means and motive. Some are likeable, many or very unlikeable so there are plenty of suspects. Hector decides it is important for people to understand what happened at the hotel and he sets about uncovering the truth and unravelling the secrets. Hector has no experience as a writer but there are friends who can help him get his story published. He gets a little muddled and tongue-tied at times and this is part of the charm of this narrator. Hector is the stand-out of this book for his flawed honesty. The book has shades of Richard Osman, Agatha Christie and even The White Lotus. It is a light and entertaining novel for fans of cozy crime. Heidi, SA, 3 Stars

This is an unusual book in that it is written by the main character, 73-year-old mild mannered Hector who had a troubled childhood and as a result suffers from compulsive behaviour. Hector has lived in the same cottage his whole life, alone after the death of his abusive father and the later death of his sister. He started at the Hotel Cavendish at the age of 16. Hector takes his profession as concierge at the Hotel Cavendish very seriously and is very good at it. Helen has encouraged him to write the book in which we are introduced to a diverse range of interesting fellow employees and guests. Hector’s life takes a huge turn when the hotel is taken over by new owner American Dave, and threatening and aggressive Detective Arjun Raj and two supportive local police investigate murder at the hotel. Many secrets are uncovered before the truth is uncovered. Cheryl, VIC, 3 Stars

An interesting read, the story is written as a dictation by Hector, the concierge, to his friend, Helen, a retired publisher, who has agreed to type out his story. Hector is rather old fashioned and comes across as a dithering old gentleman with a preference for structure and routine. The story is Hector’s account of what happened at Cavengreen Hotel where a murder has occurred and he is the chief suspect. Hector’s dictation of events is frequently interrupted as he digresses to talk about his relationship with his father, his day to day routines, his thoughts on others and Tap one. Tap two. Tap three. At times I felt a bit like Helen keeping Hector focussed on finishing the book but the storyline was interesting with an ending that I didn’t expect. Jo, VIC, 3 Stars

The Concierge is Abby Corson’s first novel and I’m sure it won’t be her last. A crime novel set in a fine old English country hotel. The story is told in the 73-year old-voice of the long-serving concierge. An interesting ‘murder mystery’ that had me guessing to the end. I think this would be enjoyed by those who liked Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club. Kevin, TAS, 3 Stars

The Concierge was an interesting debut murder mystery for lovers of a good whodunit. Helen, QLD, 3 Stars

Cute perspective of the author to tell a murder mystery story. At times the story hit a few lulls, though overall it was an easy read. Heidi, NSW, 3 Stars

Thank you to Better Reading and Ultimo Press for gifting me this book for my honest review. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie, enjoy a game of Cluedo and murder mystery nights are your kind of weekend fun then this book is for you. I enjoyed that the author branched away from the standard murder mystery trope. I believe that the audiobook version of this book may hit the mark with the listeners as Hector’s personality and quirks will really shine through his recordings. I would give this book another go if I could listen to Hector on his dictaphone stumbling through trying to solve a murder which occurred in his second home of exclusive Cavengreen Hotel. Tara, NSW, 2 Stars

While this book wasn’t for me, I really appreciate what the author has done. The character is very different. He really does come to life through the writing and the reader is able to quickly get to know who he is. If you are a fan of quirky narrators, this might be for you. Kelly, VIC, 2 Stars

    Synopsis

I suppose it would be fitting to explain that I am talking into a dictaphone and the lovely Helen will be typing out my story for you to read. She will have a certain amount of creative control—sorting out moments when I get a bit tongue-tied or slightly muddled—but I have told her to leave in as much as possible, so as not to miss any of the important bits. This is my account of the Cavengreen Hotel murder, best we get that bit in early on.

The peaceful setting of Cavengreen Hotel has been shattered by a shocking murder. Hector Harrow, the hotel's concierge, has been accused and is determined to clear his name.

Hector enlists the aid of Helen, a retired publisher, to document the shocking crime that has unfolded, with the intention of publishing a truthful account.

Amid interruptions from a nosy journalist and the egotistical antics of the hotel's new owner, American Dave, Helen works tirelessly to keep Hector focused on finishing his book.

As suspicions fall on different guests and one makes a shocking confession, Hector must navigate a web of secrets to uncover the truth.
