What is How to Be Remembered about?
On the same day each year, Tommy Llewellyn is forgotten by everyone who knows him. Overnight, he becomes a stranger to his family, his friends, his colleagues. But when Tommy falls in love, he’s determined to find a way to be remembered. It’s a story about resilience, about hope, about relationships, and what it means to leave a legacy.
How did you get such a unique idea for the story?
The idea came indirectly from social media. Once we put a part of our lives online, it’s there forever – it’s almost impossible to erase your digital footprint. I’m sure some people would love to be forgotten. It made me wonder – what if somebody just wanted to be remembered, and it was prevented from happening?
Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes, in a way. I studied as a journalist and worked for 15 years in radio. I’d always had it in the back of my mind that one day, I’d like to write a novel – but I thought I wouldn’t get the chance until retirement. Being ‘in between jobs’ at the age of 35 gave me that opportunity a lot earlier than I expected, so I went for it!
What are you working on now?
I’m putting the finishing touches on my second novel. After that, I’ve got another idea I’m very keen to explore, and then another.
What are you reading at the moment?
At the moment I’m reading The Mist, a Stephen King novella. Ever since uni I’ve been quite a steady reader, and I’m even slower when I’m writing, so a novella makes me feel like I’m powering through the pages. But I have a huge pile of fantastic Australian fiction threatening to topple at any moment, so I’ll be returning to that next.
