Uplifting Romantic Comedy: Read Our Review of Five Bush Weddings by Clare Fletcher

As a photographer, Stevie’s been to enough bush weddings to last a lifetime. When’s it going to be all about her?

With her ex soon to be married, her mum back on the dating scene, and her best friend threatening to settle down with the Most Boring Man Alive, Stevie is feeling left behind.

To top it off, her old uni mate Johnno West, whom she hasn’t seen for years, keeps turning up as best man at Stevie’s jobs. And he is looking so good.

Perhaps their youthful pact – that if they were both still single in their early thirties they’d get together – is not so crazy after all?

Then the enigmatic Charlie Jones walks into the frame…

Capturing the heartbeat of rural Australia, Five Bush Weddings is an uplifting romantic comedy about looking for love, second chances and what really matters when the bouquet has been thrown, the swag’s been rolled up and the party’s over.

Clare Fletcher has a background in journalism and manages communications for the Walkley Foundation. Five Bush Weddings is her debut novel, and there is a lot to love about it.

This is a heart-warming, entertaining combination of rural romance, romcom and contemporary women’s fiction – the lines between all these genres are becoming less obvious with great reads like these.

Stevie is a wedding photographer, a career she didn’t really plan for but rather fell into. She’s wondering when it will be her turn to be in the wedding photos, rather than always taking them. She’s a great protagonist, the likes of whom we’ve rarely seen since Bridget Jones. Throw in two potential love interests to stir up drama. The premise of the novel taking place across five weddings is wonderful. It gives the story a perfect arc, and would also make a great film (seriously, a great film or series!). This novel isn’t all fluff though. Fletcher deftly weaves in issues affecting regional Australia, and there is a profound sense of community throughout.

Five Bush Weddings is the whole package. It has heart, humour and intelligence. Add, pitch-perfect prose, appealing characters, a richly imagined setting and even a gorgeous cover. This is the perfect weekend read. I predict great things to come from Clare Fletcher – she’s off to a sensational start.
