Writers In Same Boat: Why it’s important for authors to share their personal stories

The Better Reading podcast, Stories Behind the Story, is special for a number of reasons, but one thing that really sets it apart is the space it creates for authors to tell you, the readers, their own personal stories, and their journey to becoming a writer. We spoke to some authors we have interviewed on our podcast about why it’s so important for them to have a platform where they can share their stories and speak directly to their readers:

Christian White, author of the bestselling Australian debut thriller, The Nowhere Child, told us that talking to an audience of readers about his writing journey creates a sense of support and community. ‘Writing is usually a solitary job, so having a platform for authors to tell their stories is an absolute gift, not just for the listeners, but for the authors themselves. As an author, I think it’s really important to express not just the good stuff, but the bad stuff too. Writing is the best job in the world, but it’s also hard as hell, breeds insecurity, anxiety, and impostor syndrome. Hearing about other people’s truths and hardships (and discussing our own) eases that, and reminds us we’re all in the same boat.’

Lauren Chater, bestselling author of The Lace Weaver, talked about the importance of authors feeling connected to their readers, and how platforms such as the Better Reading podcast help to foster these relationships. ‘When you’re writing a book, it can sometimes feel as though you’re working in isolation. You send the words out and hope that someone, somewhere enjoys them. The rise of social media and dedicated reading websites has changed this, though. It’s now easier than ever for authors and readers to connect and share personal stories. It brings me great joy to know my books are being read by people who love them and that we have shared the journey to publication together.’
