Dear Reader,
Imagine you found a door that would let you go back into your past and change some of the decisions you’ve made—would you enter it? Knowing that there would be consequences, and not necessarily good ones?
This was the question I asked myself when I started writing The Book of Dreams. I was fascinated by the idea that there might be no such thing as a “perfect life.” We all make small decisions every day, sometimes so small we don’t even notice. But all of those decisions together make up the individual paths of our lives.
But how can you tell a story about these “variations of life”? Confronted with this challenge, I decided to take a risk by putting one of my three main characters, Henri, in a coma. I let him float in dreams, in the unknown spaces between life and death. While there, he takes a most unexpected journey—into the different variations of his life, to see how his life changed as a result of the smallest decisions. A kiss, a step, a plane…
Some call this a “healing” book. Others a spiritual novel that encourages you to embrace yourself. Readers describe their experience as diving into in a long dream. For me it was one of the most important books I’ve written, because it changed my view on the meaning of living and loving. Love is a feeling but it is also an action. Loving someone means: do something.
Yours sincerely,
Nina George
