It’s Mine, All Mine! : Review of My Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Remember The Book with No Pictures – the best-selling book from award-winning US comic writer and actor, B.J. Novak? If you thought that a book with no pictures was going to be boring then you were wrong as it went on to be a New York Times bestseller.

If you’re not familiar with the book then we’ll let you know how it works, everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. That’s the agreement you must make before you start reading. Including reading words like BLORK. Or BLUURFBLAGGITY BLAGGITY that sound very funny. As you can imagine there are lots of laughs to be had – often at the expense of the adult who is reading aloud! You can take a look at B.J. Novak reading it to a large group of young children who are absolutely loving it here.

Now we have My Book with No Pictures. Have we confused you? Well, this is the perfect opportunity to take things into your own hands and create your own version of The Book with No Pictures by filling in the blanks. There’s lots of fun to be had!

Starting with the cover that lists B. J. Novak and then a space where you insert your own name, you are guided through a series of questions that create a story of sorts. Each page has blanks for you to fill in with words or stickers that are provided and they will all result in creating a funny sentence such as:

I like to eat … with my …Guacamole
or
Ogg ogg ogg my face is a …

You can see where all this is leading.

In the previous book there were laughs to be had but in this new book you can also set your own rules:

  1. Every day, everyone must eat … for breakfast.
  2. Everyone’s bedtime is …
  3. Everyone must … ten times a day.

Once you’ve filled in the blanks and your favourite adult has read them out loud, they are binding right?

It’s all about creating your own version of the bestselling The Book With No Pictures and then finding an adult to read it to you and laughing at how crazy they sound! What could be more appealing to a child than that?

Perfectly timed for Christmas and the Summer break, give them the chance to get creative with this book that plays with the traditional picture book format, stretches their imaginations and lets them take control – at least temporarily!

Although you may want to buy it as a gift for other people’s children…
