Colac’s Cow Lick Bookshop is Online and Open for Business

Kris Seabert and his wife, Jordie purchased Cow Lick Bookshop on the 1st of February. They joke that they don’t do things by half, because the very day they were approved to purchase the shop, they also found out they were expecting their first child.

They purchased Cow Lick from Neal Drinnan, the author of The Devils Grip. We’ve featured the store before here. They hit the ground running, with both Kris and Jordie remaining in other full-time jobs – Kris is the Content Director of the local Commercial Radio Stations 1134 3CS and Mixx FM, and Jordie is a Primary School Teacher – and Jordie’s mother Barb looking after the shop for a few hours each day.

They were just starting to find their feet when COVID-19 hit. They’d already done a few events in the shop, with the last big event being a Superhero Saturday right before they went into full isolation mode. Kris says,

“We know that we could still “officially” be open if we wanted to be, but with Jordie being pregnant, and Barb being in her 50’s, I wasn’t willing to risk my family’s health. So, we moved to a full online store, which was already half setup, but needed a full overhaul to get us up and running. The community response has been great, and we’re doing as much PR as we can to keep us in peoples newsfeeds, including putting together care packs for our local Aged Care Facilities as residents can’t come into the store or go to the library anymore. We also ran a short story competition over the school holidays and did a “Facebook Live” event where we read all the stories out before choosing a winner. The video is on our Facebook page and is definitely worth a look.”

It’s going to be tough for Kris and Jordie, especially if this lasts more than another month or two (which is looking very likely), but they’re hoping we’ll get through and be able to re-open bigger and better on the other side of all this. They really appreciate the support of their local community, but we thought we’d extend that community to the broader Better Reading audience too.

Have a book you want? Why not order it from Cow Lick! It stocks a wide range of books from farming, gardening, cookery and crafts to sci-fi and contemporary. There is a great children’s book section, as well as locally produced giftware and cards.

congrats on the purchase of the book shop and best wishes for you and your bub. My name is Maxine Foster and I live in Bundaberg Qld. Maybe you can help me but if not, not to worry. I have just finished (in 4 days) The Devil’s Grip and I’d love to contact Neal. I was totally taken in with this book as I had a few sheep and bred Siamese and Oriental Show Cats which also went overseas. There is so much in this book I can relate to and even found myself in tears. I would love to speak to Neal if you can help. I am 82 years old, live alone and constantly have a book in hand so am now going in search of other Neal books. I actually got this one at a Lifeline bookfest. Best $3 I ever spent. My phone no is 0741511542
