When Fi arrives home one day, an odd spectacle awaits her – a moving van parked outside of her house, and strangers sifting in and out as if they live there. Surely this is an honest mistake – Fi and her partner Bram have owned their home on Trinity Avenue for years, and have no intention of selling. But the home-invaders seem to be standing their ground, and are even providing proof of purchase. So who are these people? And how could they have bought a house that was never up for sale? These are all questions that Fi needs to ask Bram – but he is nowhere to be found.

//

Bram has made a terrible mistake. Well, multiple mistakes, really. His life has become a living nightmare, and all that he has hidden from his wife is now bubbling to the surface. He can either run, or face the truth – but is the truth too much to bear?

//

Louise Candlish’s Our House is centred around the gradual deterioration of Fi and Bram’s marriage. Our House is a tale of deceit and betrayal, and brings home the notion that we never truly know anyone – not even our own partner.

Candlish’s clever narration makes this book a real treat to read. Each characters’ perspective is narrated through a unique medium – podcast and word document – so as to create an air of impartiality. As a result, the book reads almost like a court hearing — as if Fi and Bram are two witnesses providing opposing accounts of the same event.

This book is technically a crime thriller, but not in the conventional ways you would expect. Unlike most crime thrillers on the market that focus on the judiciary system and police force, Our House focuses on crime at a personal, emotional level. It explores the driving forces that lead people to commit crimes in the first place, and the devastating consequences of these actions in people’s personal lives.

The story has lots of twists and turns – there’s betrayal, affairs, fraud –and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. And there’s an OMG ending.

Readers who enjoy a good thriller won’t be able to put Our House down.
