Sign Up for the 2023 Great Book Swap!

Have you ever met a ‘Lungkara’ or ‘Wamparla’? Sign up now for the 2023 Great Book Swap and learn more about Aboriginal First Languages.

Join the Great Book Swap (GBS) and celebrate reading, promote social justice, learn more about Indigenous languages, cultures and stories and support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation!

This year the Foundation aims to raise $180,000 to gift 18,000 culturally relevant books to children and families in remote Communities.

Schools, social groups, corporates, and individuals are invited to sign up now and get ready to Swap.

Hosting a GBS is easy:

  1. Register online – The Great Book Swap | Indigenous Literacy Foundation
  2. Promote your event and collect donations
  3. Gather your books and prepare for your event
  4. Swap
  5. Submit your funds and share your experience!

The ILF’s website, www.greatbookswap.org.au, provides promotional materials and insightful First Language learning resources to help you raise money and awareness, thank donors, and reach your fundraising goal.

Schools, including early learning centres, that register and host their Swap before 30 June, automatically go into a draw to win a virtual school visit by ILF lifetime Ambassador and acclaimed authors, Andy Griffiths.

This year, to promote multi-literacy and multilingualism, ILF is also launching a second fundraiser, Busking for Change. The fundraiser developed by ILF Ambassador Josh Pyke engages primary students in a joyful activity incorporating song, music, movement, and language. Simply put, schools learn a song and raise funds for the ILF.

Busking for Change is a term three activity, culminating with a final school performance on Indigenous Literacy Day on the 6 September.  Find out more at ilf.org.au/bfc

About ILF

The ILF is a Community-led, not-for-profit organisation that invests in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities by providing tools and resources requested by Communities to shape their children’s literacy futures.

In remote Communities across Australia, there is often no infrastructure such as libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the achievements of Indigenous children.

“Every year the dedicated ILF team works closely with remote Indigenous Communities to support reading and learning. Through ILF’s programs, books are gifted, some translated into first languages, and others are created by Communities, reflecting the value and importance of culture and language.”

Suzy Wilson, ILF Founder

The Foundations’ three programs:

  1. Book Buzz aims to develop familiarity and engagement with books for children under five.
  2. Book Supply gifts new, culturally relevant books to remote Communities across Australia, and
  3. Community Publishing Projects support Communities to write and illustrate their own stories in languages of their choice.

In 2023 ILF aims to:

  • Gift 120,000 culturally relevant books through the Book Supply program
  • Support 100 playgroups with the Book Buzz program
  • Publish 33 books representing 25 First Languages through the Community Publishing Projects program

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation receives no government assistance and although this allows us to work dynamically, it does mean we rely solely on the generosity of supporters and sponsors.
