Soaring into ILF’s 2026 Great Book Swap with Andy Griffiths and Bunuba Storytellers at Taronga Zoo

Soaring into ILF’s 2026 Great Book Swap with Andy Griffiths and Bunuba Storytellers at Taronga Zoo

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation proudly launched its annual fundraiser, the Great Book Swap at Sydney Taronga Zoo with ILF Ambassador and beloved children’s author, Andy Griffiths as well as authors Joe, Stacey, Boheme and Remi Ross of ILF published title, Winthali (Fire) to an audience of First Nations primary school students.

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to connect and celebrate stories, learn more about Indigenous Languages and culture, while raising funds to help the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) to gift culturally relevant books to kids in remote Communities.

“Hosting a Great Book Swap at your school, university or workplace is the perfect way to remind your friends, students and co-workers of the power of books to entertain, enchant and maybe even change their lives.”

“And, at the same time, you are helping to raise funds used to provide books for children in remote Communities so that they can experience the same benefits. Reading opens doors!” says ILF Ambassador Andy Griffiths

The launch celebrated Girrgnayi (brown falcon in Bunuba language) – one of the 4 Great Book Swap Animals that schools, individuals and organisations receive resources about upon registration! In the Dreamtime stories of the Bunuba People, Girrgnayi (brown falcon) brings fire to the Land and People and is an important feature of the Winthali story.

“There are less than 50 Elders who speak Bunuba now and it’s important to keep our Language, Culture and Stories alive for the next generation,” says Joe Ross.

The Great Book Swap is a perfect celebration of reading and stories for your school, library, book club or workplace. Funds raised support the ILF to provide culturally-relevant books to remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

Learn more and register your school, library, social club or workplace via the Great Book Swap website.

  1. This event sounds amazing, especially sharing stories with kids. It reminds me of preserving memories, like how I use a video upscaler to restore old clips and make them clearer for sharing.

It’s fascinating how many books were judged before being properly understood.

Reading across languages used to be a barrier, but now it’s much easier. I’ve been trying out https://www.neonlingo.com/zh-CN and it actually helps with understanding context while browsing.

Curious if others here use similar tools?

  4. Easy Games says:

Supporting literacy through the Great Book Swap is a wonderful initiative! While fostering a love for reading is a serious mission, these community events make learning feel as fun as Easy Games. A great way to celebrate Bunuba storytelling at the zoo!

As someone who loves sharing resources (like Survive Zombie Arena Code guides for gamers), I truly appreciate how the Great Book Swap makes literacy accessible while honoring traditions. Keep up the amazing work!

What a wonderful initiative that brings together storytelling, culture, and literacy in such a meaningful way. It’s inspiring to see young readers engaging with Indigenous stories and languages while supporting access to books for remote communities. What a powerful initiative celebrating storytelling, culture, and early reading engagement among young learners. Events like this help strengthen community bonds while keeping traditional voices and modern literature alive together. It’s also useful to explore additional public information resources such as https://nassaucountypropertyappraiser.org for deeper local data access. 10. Andrew says:

Really insightful breakdown of the 7-step approach for managing back pain, especially the focus on biomechanics. I also came across a useful resource on overall customer experiences and feedback insights https://autozonecares.online that adds an interesting perspective on service quality and user input. The emphasis on movement patterns and gradual progression makes a lot of sense for long-term relief. Looking forward to applying some of these principles in daily routine.
