The First Better Reading Book Club Live: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

The First Better Reading Book Club Live: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

056 Big Little Lies_stickeredOur first Better Reading Book Club Live will discuss Australian author Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies.

If you haven’t already read Big Little Lies, you may have heard a lot about it.  This book spent months on the Australian and US bestseller lists and it’s so good that Reese Witherspoon snapped up the screen rights for a television mini series starring Reese and our own Nicole Kidman.

It’s about a tight community of parents and centres around the local primary school in a small, imaginary suburb on Sydney’s Northern beaches. But who knew that a school trivia night could lead to such mayhem and murder!?

One of the reasons we chose Big Little Lies is that, while it’s a hugely enjoyable page turner, it also has a serious side. It manages to be dark, thought-provoking and at the same time hilariously funny. Critics have felt the same way, with Janet Maslin of The New York Times writing: “A seemingly fluffy book suddenly touches base with vicious reality…” and The Washington Post’s Carol Memmott of a similar view: “It takes a powerful stand against domestic violence even as it makes us laugh.”

You’ve no doubt heard the hype already, so if you haven’t read the book yet, be sure to grab a copy and let us know what you think of this dark comedy. BYO your own wine, coffee or tea and feel free to wear your PJs – you can see us, but we can’t see you!
BookClubTileSquareBetter Reading’s Cheryl Akle will be doing the talking, along with some special guests, but we’d love to see your comments throughout on our Facebook page and we’ll try to address as many as we can during our discussion. Even if you don’t agree that this is a great book club book, please let us know and maybe you’d like to make a suggestion for a future selection? Or simply visit our page on the night and watch, whether you want to join in the discussion or not. It’ll be fun!

So join us and other passionate book lovers from our Facebook community to kick-off this world-first – The Better Reading Book Club Live. Mark the date in your diary: Wednesday 27, April at 8pm.

                      Synopsis

I guess it started with the mothers.''It was all just a terrible misunderstanding.''I'll tell you exactly why it happened.'Pirriwee Public is a beautiful little beachside primary school where children are taught that ‘sharing is caring.’ So how has the annual School Trivia Night ended in full-blown riot? Sirens are wailing. People are screaming. The principal is mortified. And one parent is dead. Was it a murder, a tragic accident or just good parents gone bad? As the parents at Pirriwee Public are about to discover, sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal…Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, school-yard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.#7 in Australia's Top 100 2016
