The Reading Hour is one of the most celebrated annual reading initiatives in Australia, and supports individuals, families and communities to discover and rediscover the joy of reading. This year the Reading Hour’s ambassador is comedian and author, Magda Szubanski!

The Reading Hour emerged from the National Year of Reading 2012, and is an ongoing campaign from Love2Read, funded by the ALIA Australian Public Library Alliance and is in partnership with the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.

The Reading Hour reminds parents, caregivers and families that reading together doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking in their increasingly busy lives, but rather encourages the ‘anytime, anywhere’ mantra, building a foundation in society whereby reading is a gift, given freely.

Although we do nominate a specific time, for 2016 it’s the 16th of August from 6 – 7pm, you can hold events to celebrate The Reading Hour anytime during that week. Contact us if you’re interested in holding an event for The Reading Hour 2016, and we’ll look at partnering you with a local author from your area.

The official time is 6-7pm on Tuesday 16 August nationally this year, but events can be held anytime during that week!

How can you promote your event?

Send us information about your upcoming event with The Reading Hour and we will upload it to our website and Facebook page. If you are promoting through social media, please use the hashtag #readinghour. And don’t forget to send us pictures afterwards!

As well as posters, you can also download a media release template from our new website.
