Better Reading recently hosted a crime author panel with Karen Herbert, Dave Warner and David Whish-Wilson in conversation with Cheryl for an evening discussing crime fiction.

About the authors:

Dave Warner

Dave Warner is an author, musician and screenwriter. He has written nine novels and six non-fiction books. His first novel, City of Light, won the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award for Fiction, and Before it Breaks (2015) the Ned Kelly Award for best Australian crime fiction. His novel Clear to the Horizon features the lead characters from both these books. His most recent crime novels are River of Salt and Over My Dead Body. Dave Warner first came to national prominence with his gold album Mug’s Game, and his band Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs. In 2017 he released his tenth album, When. He has been named a Western Australian State Living Treasure and has been inducted into the WAMi Rock’n’Roll of Renown.

Karen Herbert

Karen Herbert is the author of The River Mouth (2021) and The Cast Aways of Harewood Hall (2022). She spent her childhood in Geraldton on the midwest coast of Australia, attending local schools before moving to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia where she attained a Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Science in Applied Psychology. Karen has worked in aged care, disability services, higher education, Indigenous land management, social housing and the public sector, and is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is a Board Member of The Intelife Group and Advocare, and President of the Fellowship of Australian Writers (WA). Karen lives in Perth, Western Australia with her husband, Ross, and the occasional fledgling.

David Whish-Wilson

David Whish-Wilson is the author of eight novels and three creative non-fiction books. He was born in Newcastle, NSW but raised in Singapore, Victoria and WA. He left Australia aged eighteen to live for a decade in Europe, Africa and Asia, where he worked as a barman, actor, streetseller, petty criminal, labourer, exterminator, factory worker, gardener, clerk, travel agent, teacher and drug trial guinea pig. David’s first novel in the Frank Swann crime series, Line of Sight (Penguin Australia) was shortlisted for a Ned Kelly Award in 2012. He has since written three more in the series – the first three being published in Germany by Suhrkamp Verlag. David wrote the Perth book in the NewSouth Books city series, which was short-listed for a WA Premiers Book Award.

            David Whish-Wilson

            David Whish-Wilson is an acclaimed crime-writer and academic who grew up between NSW, Singapore, Victoria and WA. He left Australia aged eighteen to live for a decade in Europe, Africa and Asia, where he worked as a barman, actor, street-seller, petty criminal, labourer, exterminator, factory worker, gardener, clerk, travel agent, teacher and drug-trial guinea pig. He now lives in Fremantle and coordinates the creative writing program at Curtin University.

            David Warner

            One of Australia’s most influential athletes and the world’s most explosive batsman, David Warner was the leading run scorer in Australia’s whitewash against England last summer, which attracted millions of viewers across the five Test Ashes series. Over the next year, Australia will contest a T20 World Cup, an ODI World Cup at home and another Ashes series in England and Warner is set to spearhead the country’s ambitions in all three series. David loves kids, loves kids playing cricket and has written these books about growing up with cricket to encourage kids of all persuasions to play for fun and fitness.
