I Will Miss You Tomorrow is the first in a new Norwegian crime series featuring disgraced ex-Chief Inspector Thorkild Aske, a damaged man with a complicated past.

Thorkild Aske is fresh out of prison and a stint in a psychiatric hospital. He’s trying to be rehabilitated into society, going to therapy and taking a cocktail of various drugs to lessen the effects of his anxiety, depression and pain. Sometimes he takes more than he should, wanting to lose himself in the drugged dreams of his beloved Frei. The woman he loved. The woman he has lost forever.

But when Frei’s young cousin goes missing off the Norwegian coast, Thorkild is called in by the family to help find him, dead or alive. As much as he wants to, Thorkild cannot refuse. The local police have no interest in this missing person, and Thorkild remains their only hope. So begins his venture to find the missing cousin. But things are never as they seem in these stories. When the body count starts to rise, Thorkild finds himself on the receiving end of speculation and accusations. Can he find the answers he needs about the missing cousin before it’s too late? And who is the ghost he keeps seeing; the faceless young woman?  Thorkild has found himself deep in treacherous waters. He’s lost his reputation – will he now lose his life? And his ultimate question remains, when you go searching for your demons, what happens when you find them?

Heine Bakkeid has written a truly unique and atmospheric novel. Thorkild Aske is what some may call an unreliable narrator. He is constantly taking prescribed medication and many times the reader is left wondering if what he is seeing and saying is actually happening, which adds to the haunting story. The mystery of the missing cousin is only one aspect to this multi-faceted story, and you won’t work your way through all the layers of this complex novel until Bakkeid wants you to.

Originally published in Norwegian, and translated into English by Anne Bruce, the Norwegian setting of the book adds another dimension, and almost character to the book. The wild weather and rugged landscapes provided the perfect backdrop to this chilling tale. Throw in some eerie, supernatural folklore elements and you have a fantastic Nordic Noir that will keep you turning the pages. Our only recommendation is to read this book with the lights on, and keep a blanket handy, as this book will chill you to the core.

            About the author

            Heine Bakkeid

Heine Bakkeid (b. 1974) grew up in the rugged landscape of Northern Norway, where mist-shrouded waters meet some of Scandinavia’s most striking mountain formations. Bakkeid made his literary debut in 2005 when he published a spy novel for young adults. Since then he has gone on to write several novels for young readers. The acclaimed I Will Miss You Tomorrow - the first installment in the Thorkild Aske series - was Bakkeid’s first venture into crime fiction, and earned him the critics’ recognition as a virtuoso of darkly atmospheric suspense. The series’ dark undertones and windswept landscapes are fetched from Bakkeid’s own native North.
