‘High in a tree house live two very best friends. One is a girl and one is a dog. And everyone knows them as Evie and Pog.’
Evie is a spirited and curious six-year-old who likes nothing better than knitting and jumping. She also likes books (of course!) and cake. Her best friend is the delightfully eccentric dog Pog who is two and curiously likes to drink tea and read the paper.
They are lucky enough to be living the dream in a wonderfully equipped tree house located in Granny’s backyard. Set amongst the branches of a beautiful silver ash with pink leaves, there is a slide, a reading nook and, just below, very soft daisy-spot grass.
There is also Granny Gladys who lives in the big house and similar to Evie, likes knitting, baking, books and cakes but her favourite thing to do is cleaning – dusting, mopping, sweeping and often she is a bit over zealous in this department!
In Evie and Pog Take Off! Pog has his first taste of puppy school and he isn’t impressed; Granny ends up with a cake on her head and Evie’s friend Noah takes flight.
Continuing the fun in Evie and Pog Puppy Time! Evie, Pog, Granny and Noah knit all manner of things to keep the treehouse warm. Noah’s socks save the day, Granny lets loose with the scissors and they build an interesting contraption.
As you can see there is action right from the very first page along with laughs and a few challenges to the imagination that will get kids thinking.
This series is perfect for beginner readers, those who have a good grasp of the basics and are looking for chapter books that will take them to the next level. While coming in at over 100 pages the books are divided into smaller chapters making it less overwhelming and easy to read in instalments.
The series has been compared to Ella and Olivia and the illustrations are delightful. There is a wonderful floor plan of the treehouse at the start of the book to set the scene for young readers that could also inspire would-be architects to sit down and plan out their own dream tree house. Teachers notes are to come, so no doubt there will be many activities that kids can follow up with after devouring the stories.
Author Tania McCartney is perfectly placed to know what kids love reading as she’s not only an author and illustrator (with currently 50 books in print or production) but also the founder of Kid’s Book Review and The Happy Book children’s podcast.
These two books will soon be followed by Evie and Pog Party Perfect in May so watch this space!
