A High-Flying Adventure: Read our Review of Dragon Legend by Katie and Kevin Tsang

Billy Chan was planning on a summer most twelve-year-olds dream about – bonding with his very own dragon. But Billy and his friends aren’t having a very relaxing summer after all. Their friend, Dylan, has been kidnapped by the evil Dragon of Death.

Now it’s up to Billy and his friends to travel through time, back to the Dangerous Realm, in order to save him. Luckily they have their own dragons on their side, but they’ll need to collect eight magical pearls if they’re to amass enough power to destroy the Dragon of Death and her followers for good. So begins an epic quest that will take them to the depths of the Frozen Wasteland and the imperial palaces of Ancient China.

Dragon Legend is a high-flying, edge-of-your-seat adventure and the second book in the Dragon Realm series. It’s an extraordinary sequel that picks up right where Dragon Mountain left off, taking the series to a whole new level – literally! Themes of good and evil are portrayed sincerely using endearing humour and soaring adventure.

The book’s charm lies in the nostalgia of the past in Dragon Realm, with character traits of strength and determination that transcend time. Katie and Kevin Tsang’s choice to get the friend group to travel through time is the ideal gateway to give necessary history and background to the series, elevating the storyline in an invigorating way.

The Tsangs met in 2008 while studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. They are co-writers of the young fiction series Sam Wu is Not Afraid, and Katie also writes Young Adult fiction under the name Katherine Webber. Their individual careers and history as co-writers illustrates why the Dragon Realm series is so incredible.

Dragon Legend has plenty of unexpected twists and turns that will leave readers aged 9+ surprised. I read this in one sitting – I just couldn’t put it down and I’m still reeling about the ending. I now can’t wait for Dragon City (the third book in the series), expected to be released later this year.
