Callers can conjure anything out of thin air. But what if the things don’t come from nothing? What if they’re taken from… someone else?
In the world of Elipsom, the ability to Call, or summon objects, is a coveted skill. And yet despite being born into a family of Callers, Quin doesn’t have the gift.
But everything changes when instead of summoning an object, Quin makes something disappear. He quickly discovers that the objects Callers bring into their world aren’t conjured at all, but are taken from another land, and another people who have had their lives slowly stolen from them.
Now Quin must team up with Allie, a girl who’s determined to stop this unjust practice, and decide whether he should remain loyal to his family or betray them-and save the world.
From dazzling newcomer Kiah Thomas comes an arresting, fast-paced and thought-provoking adventure about the consequences of wanting more than we need.
The Callers is a magical story about Elipsom, a society that depends on Callers, people who summon everything into existence. With his mother on the chief council of Callers, and Quin failing the exam, he deals with relatable problems of familial expectations and belonging. This novel has its fair share of surprises, twists and turns, but it is also full of warmth – Quin really tugged at my heartstrings.
Full of fantasy and intrigue, The Callers follows a unique, captivating storyline that will have you gripping the edge of your seat – I read it in one sitting! Told through a fascinating system of magic, there are important lessons about colonialism, the role of technology and eco-management woven throughout. I appreciated how clearly this message shines through – Thomas does a fantastic job speaking to middle-grade readers in an easy and digestible way.
With its thought-provoking and topical themes, I think The Callers will appeal to middle-grade readers aged 8+ and will make a fantastic addition to classrooms and libraries. Based on the ending, my fingers are crossed for an action-packed sequel.
