The worldwide children’s literary phenomenon, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, just keeps growing and growing. With this new release, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Big Shot, there are now 16 books in the series, plus spin-off books, merchandise, movies and more.
In Big Shot, Greg Heffley and sports just don’t mix. After a disastrous field day competition at school, Greg decides that when it comes to his athletic career, he’s officially retired. But after his mom urges him to give sports one more chance, he reluctantly agrees to sign up for basketball.
Tryouts are a mess, and Greg is sure he won’t make the cut. But he unexpectedly lands a spot on the worst team.
As Greg and his new teammates start the season, their chances of winning even a single game look slim. But in sports, anything can happen. When everything is on the line and the ball is in Greg’s hands, will he rise to the occasion? Or will he blow his big shot?
Jeff Kinney is a talented cartoonist, and his illustrations add a lot of humour to the story. They are also a helpful tool for independent readers, assisting them to imagine the action taking place. There’s also various levels of humour at play here, and adults might get a few extra laughs.
The real charm of Greg Heffley is that we can all relate to his awkwardness and anxiety. He’s a dreamer who’s forever hopeful. His ability to give basketball a chance, even when he thinks he and sports don’t mix, is proof of his stamina. Like Greg, Big Shot shows Wimpy Kid fans that hard work and perseverance is what will help you reach your goals – even when you aren’t naturally inclined.
If your kids are already familiar with the series, then I don’t need to tell you that you should grab a copy now. If you’re new to the series or your little reader has just reached the right age, then grab a few titles for them and sit them down and enjoy the silence!
Readers 7+ will enjoy the humour, pathos, and endurance of this book. The story is easy to follow and there is no need to read the other books in the series in order, though I can highly recommend all of them. Millions of fans can’t be wrong!
