For five years, Australian doctor Sofia Raso has lived in Kabul’s vibrant Shaahir Square, working with Dr Jabril Aziz to support the local women. She knows that living peacefully in Kabul requires following two simple rules: keep a low profile, and keep out of local affairs.
Yet when threatening night letters from the Taliban taunt the town, and young boys disappear from Jamal Mina, Kabul’s largest slum, Sofia can no longer remain silent. While the square is encased by fear, an elegant former warlord proves an unlikely ally, and a former lover re-emerges with a warning. As the search for the boys intensifies, and Sofia feels herself being drawn back into a love affair she thought had ended, it soon becomes clear that answers will bring a heavy price.
Gripping and evocative, The Night Letters takes you to the heart of Kabul in a story of secrets, friendship, and love in all its imperfect guises. Mainly set in the city of Kabul, author Denise Leith captures the scar ridden remnants of the Afghanistan war with her confronting depictions of the city and its diverse range of characters.
Sofia is a compelling protagonist. Her impulsiveness is something many of us can relate to, and through her, the novel’s themes of resilience and perseverance really shine through.
Denise Leith is no stranger to experiencing the harsh realities of the world, working in, and travelling extensively throughout many developing countries. She spent a number of years mentoring Afghan women in fiction and non-fiction work. Her level of experience and personal research is so beautifully brought to life in her novel, and you can really feel the passion for this culture and region in every word she writes.
The book also delves into the mysterious ‘Night Letters’ set around the community that sets Sofia on a journey of determination and heartfelt self-discovery. It’s inspiring seeing Sofia take on something much bigger than herself and really displays the true essence of the human spirit and is something that we all strive for.
Denise’s richly drawn descriptions of the city are on full display here, and the interactions between Sofia and the many other characters will make you feel like you’re there with them.
The Night Letters is an exquisite story of the incredible resilience of finding yourself in the unknown. With some beautiful character work and passionate and honest prose, The Night Letters is a definite must-read!
