Themes of power, control, sex and gender roles dominate Camilla Lackberg’s The Gilded Cage, unfortunately all too familiar even in contemporary society. Faye is a strong, intelligent and determined character and although it was incredibly frustrating when she was trapped in her ‘Gilded Cage’, but once she broke free and set out on her path of recovery and then revenge I could understand where things were headed. Chris and Kerstin both added to the strong female characters, each with their own challenges. Overall, a great read and an emotional and slightly bittersweet ending. Definitely will recommend! – Imogen, VIC, 5 stars
The Gilded Cage is the first book that I have read by Camilla Lackberg and I am absolutely hooked. It was such an intriguing, fast-paced, thrilling story of betrayal and revenge – I just wanted to keep reading to unveil the secrets kept by the mysterious main character, Faye. The story opens with Faye being told her ex-husband murdered their child, and the book proceeds to reveal the story of the relationship between Faye and Jack, switching between timelines in the past and present. There are some themes in this book that could be potentially triggering for some readers but I personally really loved the book and I will definitely be reading more of Camilla Lackberg’s work in the future. I give The Gilded Cage five hugely thrilling stars! – Amanda, QLD, 5 stars
This addictive and intelligent psychological thriller pulled me in from the get-go. Lots of great twists, and interesting characters that you love to hate make The Gilded Cage a real page turner that you won’t want to put down. – Mena, NSW, 5 stars
What a delightfully seductive tale of lust, betrayal and revenge Camilla Lackberg serves up in her latest offering, The Gilded Cage. Main protagonist Faye Adelheim is nothing short of complex, playing both the oppressed wife and scorned woman after her narcissistic husband decides she no longer fits in his ideal world. I love the way the narrative is interspersed with short snippets from past and future moments that leave you yearning for more. The delightfully dark humour that is dotted throughout is just the perfect amount of quirky to balance out the story. There was no putting this book down, it was a nail biting race to the end. An utterly addictive psychological thriller; I will be on the lookout for Camilla’s other work! The chilling message from this tale is still ringing loud and clear long after reading; subservience is not a life sentence. Much gratitude to Better Reading Preview for the advanced copy! – Sarah, VIC, 5 stars
The Gilded Cage is an addictive, twisty and very sexy psychological thriller that takes the reader on an engaging ride. I loved this author’s writing style, why had I never heard of Camilla Läckberg before? Faye Adelheim leads the type of life that others envy, she lives in a luxury apartment, no expense spared in the most exclusive area of Stockholm. She has everything she’s ever wanted including a gorgeous millionaire husband and an adorable daughter. Faye thinks everything is sweet in her marriage and is shocked to find herself betrayed and traded in for a younger model. She finds herself penniless and left with nothing. As the story unfolds we see how this smart women’s determined revenge turns terrifyingly brutal. Faye’s an interesting character she’s dark, manipulative and revengeful and is hiding plenty of secrets past and present, even her real name! This deliciously dark thriller was brilliant, an easy fun read and is released April 2nd 2020. – Gloria, SA, 5 stars
It’s difficult to review Camilla Lackberg’s The Gilded Cage without revealing spoilers. Just when you think you know where the story is heading, it takes off in another direction. Swedish author Lackberg’s extensive experience is apparent in the tight plotting and denouement. The story rockets along, intriguing the reader and making it hard to put down. Not knowing much about Sweden, or very wealthy people, isn’t an impediment to enjoying this book. It makes the universal themes a bit more exotic for Australian readers. I haven’t read any other of Lackberg’s titles but I’m going to seek them out now. – Penny, VIC, 5 stars

The Gilded Cage by Camilla Lackberg is hard to describe but is a book you need to read. I’ve never read a book by Camilla Lackberg but I’m glad I got a preview copy from Better Reading. It’s a clever story set in Sweden about Faye Adelheim & her life as loving mother & wife until it all changes. It’s a psychological thriller that will keep you hooked & wanting more. I really don’t want to give too much away because I want everyone to enjoy the ride like I did. 5 stars for a wonderful book. – Terry, NSW, 5 stars
My goodness Camilla Lackberg – where have you been all my life! This was my first book by this author and most certainly will not be my last. The Gilded Cage is an addictive, twisty and shocking psychological thriller and I could not get enough of it! I do not want to spoil this book one bit for anybody – it is best to go in relatively blind. It is a story of love and betrayal, of friendship and revenge – and revenge is sweet! The main character Faye Adelheim is so deceivingly written. She is a loving mother and devoted wife to one of Sweden’s most successful businessman. And she is happy – or so she thinks. When she is traded in for a younger model the real Faye comes out – and it will surprise you what she is capable of. Her past is dark and her real name is not even Faye. You really need to read this book to fully understand my excitement at reading this clever story. I have already checked out some more of her books and will be adding her to my list of authors to watch. Thanks so much Better Reading and Harper Collins Australia for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased – Mandy, NSW, 5 stars
This book is an example of a story the reader can’t put down. Lackberg creates a sense of suspense, not in the thriller sense, but in the outraged-reader ‘how is this going to be addressed??’ sense. Faye’s character is developed as the oppressed wife of a very successful business man. Her contribution to her husband’s business success is not being acknowledged and she is being further and further denuded of any sense of value as a wife, mother and person. But there are tantalising glimpses of her history; who she was before she reinvented herself as Faye… The friendship Faye enjoys is powerfully played out and the multiple sex scenes are raw and gritty. This all combines to create the character of Faye and an understanding of her developing story. Great read, thoroughly recommended and looking forward to future publications by Camilla Lackberg. Many thanks to HarperCollins publishers for the ARC copy provided for review. – Merilyn, WA, 5 stars
