When Tilda Finch is diagnosed with invisibility, she’s not overly surprised – she’s felt invisible for years. She has a good life and a successful business selling inspirational quotes on merchandise. But she’s never really recovered from her divorce. Or, if she’s honest, her childhood.
Tilda’s past has taken a toll and she’s lost sight of herself. Now, with the possibility of completely disappearing, she must face the trauma of her past and rewrite the way she perceives the world, and herself.
Entertaining, hilarious and poignant, Tilda Is Visible addresses the power of our thoughts and how childhood trauma shapes our adult experience.

I’ve just finished Tilda Is Visible and it was amazing! This was one of the most wholesome, feel-good novels I’ve ever read. I could relate in so many different ways and I finished it feeling so uplifted and inspired to live every day with a new outlook. I think every mum out there could get something from this book because once we have kids, we all feel likely we lose a part of ourselves. I highly recommend to pretty much every female out there to have a read of this book. I promise, you will walk away having taken something positive from this book. The chapters are also really short which I loved but it made putting it down that much harder (I kept thinking, just one more chapter quickly!) Emma, WA, 5 Stars
What a wonderful experience to read this book. Right from the first chapter, I was hooked and intrigued by the storyline and not knowing where this was going really captured my interest. Tilda’s life turned out to be my life and the revelation of PEARL’s existence opened my eyes and heart to the fact that change is possible. I have never been one to read self-help books so found this fictional gem very therapeutic. It got me thinking and feeling things long forgotten or hidden. The joy of female friendship, family, abusive relationships and true, pure love really touched my heart and I learnt so much in my own self-discovery. I know several people who need to read this wonderous book and I will be recommending it sincerely. Thank you to Jane Tara for taking me on this journey and to all those invisible people out there, stay strong and believe you are worth it. Jane Tara is a force to be reckoned with and can’t wait for her next book. Shelley, QLD, 5 Stars
This book was great. I laughed and laughed. A fantastic, inspiring story and once I started I couldn’t put it down. Samara, QLD, 5 Stars
I absolutely adored this book. One of the best books I have read in a long time. It made me consider my life and how I talk to myself. Lee, QLD, 5 Stars
I absolutely adored Jane Tara’s new novel Tilda Is Visible. Quirky, hilarious, heartwarming and entirely unique, I devoured this book in two days. Tilda is so disarmingly relatable, I’m sure almost any woman of a certain age would see something of themselves in her. I really love her enduring strong female friendships, and her deep love of her beachside suburb, but most of all her sense of humour! I think this book offers much food for thought and I believe it will change the way I see the world and how more importantly how I see myself. Some might say it’s life changing. I will be recommending this to all my female friends and family! Thanks so much to Better Reading and Affirm Press for the amazing opportunity to read and review Tilda. She will stay with me for a long time. J, VIC, 5 Stars
Equal parts hilarious and heart-wrenching, the story of Tilda’s invisibility will resonate with many women who feel they are fading into the background of their own lives and are no longer ‘seen’. Well-written and well-paced, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend. Alanna, QLD, 5 Stars
Wow I think this is one of the best books I have ever read – as a middle-aged female myself, I really resonated with Tilda and am quietly glad that we actually cannot become invisible right? A lovely story about friendships, romance, self-healing and self-discovery! I would highly recommend this to anyone who has ever felt like less of a person at any stage in their life. An amazing debut that is worthy of the 5-star rating. Jodi, QLD, 5 Stars
Tilda Finch has felt invisible for a long time. Her divorce has taken a toll on her life. Tilda consults her doctor and she is diagnosed with invisibility. She learns that she is not alone with invisibility. She must face her past. Her doctor tries to help Tilda. Her old friends and daughters are supportive. They all try to help her. A great read for anyone who feels that they are invisible. You are not alone. Denise, VIC, 5 Stars
Thank you for my advance reading copy. The story is interesting. Tilda Finch, 52 years old, is a successful entrepreneur. Her company sells inspirational quotes on merchandise. She is suddenly suffering from invisibility. Some parts of her body become invisible. In her healing journey to overcome her invisibility, she digs into her past and embraces her heartbreaks, pain, trauma, anger, shame and guilt, and meets new friends along the way. As she rewired her fear, she learned to see the world differently. I love the statement in the book that ‘We can’t force healing on anyone else but to be a beacon of light for others.’ Margaret, NSW, 5 Stars
Firstly, thank you to Better Reading for this advanced copy. Tilda is diagnosed with Invisibility in her early 50s as a divorced mother with two grown daughters. She has a tight-knit group of supportive friends who she quickly shares this prognosis with. Whilst devouring this first novel from Jane Tara, it makes you think about your own past, unsolved matters, positivity, quietening your negative thoughts, loving and accepting yourself, and being seen. It will have you laughing, realising your own thought patterns, and is a must-read for women of all ages. Nicky, QLD, 5 Stars
A refreshing read, full of humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Luciana, WA, 5 Stars
Tilda is Visible made me feel seen! Multifaceted, humorous, thought provoking, and an absolute must-read. It wasn’t just a story, it was a journey of discovery. And because I was able to see so much of myself in Tilda, it was a journey of my self-discovery too. Danae, TAS, 5 Stars
Tilda is visible, she is worthy, strong and a lesson to us all. With this wonderful story, Jane Tara has gifted all women of a certain age permission to be seen. Although Tilda Is Visible is a work of fiction, it is full of self-help hints regarding meditation and being kind to oneself. It is very easy to read with plenty of comical real-life situations. Janelle, NSW, 5 Stars
This book is a beautiful novel all about the methods that help Tilda be recognised as the incredible person she is, by others, but mostly by herself! Tilda has to go through a lot of soul searching and self-help remedies until she discovers what works for her to overcome her diagnosis of invisibility. With the support of her daughters, her friends and a new love interest, Tilda digs deep into her psyche to renovate her negative self-talk and re-engage with her self-image in a more positive way. This novel is uplifting and totally inspiring to women of a certain age, or indeed any age, to love themselves and be seen for who they truly are. Great book! Kristy, NSW, 5 Stars
A delightful and inspiring book by Jane Tara, a children’s author and writer of five novels and plays. We find the main character Tilda, a divorced woman in her early fifties. Five years earlier, her marriage had collapsed after 16 years. Tilda still cannot find an explanation why her marriage failed. Her love for Tom was one of happiness and faithfulness until he decides to leave her. Tilda is a mother of two children, an accomplished photographer and a successful business manager, a business that sells inspirational quotes on merchandise. The novel is a psychological read that keeps the reader engaged and curious. The author creates a realistic and complex character in Tilda, who is both sympathetic and flawed. She also explores the ethical and emotional implications of invisibility, and how it affects Tilda’s relationships with others and with herself. The novel raises questions about what it means to be seen, to be known, and to belong and not feel invisible. Roxana, VIC, 5 Stars
Tilda Is Visible is a fantastic book that tells the story of Tilda, a middle-aged woman on a journey to understand herself. The author, Jane Tara, does an amazing job making Tilda feel real and relatable. The writing is easy to understand, bringing Tilda’s world to life with vivid descriptions. The story is not just about Tilda but also about the connections we have with others. The friendships and family relationships in the book feel genuine, adding depth to the story. The author mixes funny, sad and thoughtful moments perfectly, keeping you hooked from beginning to end. The novel’s message is about being true to yourself and accepting who you are. It goes beyond physical visibility, highlighting the importance of being recognised for who you truly are. Overall, Tilda Is Visible is a touching and inspiring read that stays with you even after you finish it. If you enjoy stories about self-discovery and meaningful connections, this book is a must-read. Laura, WA, 5 Stars
Congratulations to Jane Tara for an amazing book, an incredibly unique and thought-provoking read. The novel centres on Tilda and the issue of invisibility, an issue many of us face. I know I could relate to much of what Tilda was going through as I find myself in similar circumstances. The writing is brilliant, very engaging and entertaining, intelligent, warm and wise. I also loved the inspiring quotes throughout the book. The characters, particularly Tilda’s support network of family, friends, love interest, doctors and therapists are very likeable, a crew I think anyone would be lucky to have. Thank you Jane Tara for reminding me to be kinder to myself – and to persist with meditation! Danielle, VIC, 5 Stars
I loved this debut novel by Jane Tara… the perfect self-help book full of wisdom and advice, disguised as a witty, tender, thought-provoking story of Tilda Finch, newly suffering from invisibility, looking desperately for ways to “cure” her condition. She learns that she is not alone in this predicament and meets some wonderful women along the way. Would that I could catch up over a coffee or lazy lunch with this gang! Her old friends, work colleagues and two daughters are supportive, and an unexpected encounter leads to a possible romance which requires Tilda to re-examine her past relationships and memories of her childhood. Her trusted GP tries to help, a support group disappoints, and a recommended therapist prods Tilda to re-examine her inherent thoughts and beliefs about herself (the self-talk we all carry with us) and re-program the dialogue. As a woman of a certain age myself, I fell right into this and highly recommend it for anyone interested in this phenomenon of “invisibility”. An inspiring read, thanks to Better Reading for an uncorrected ARC. Lesley, QLD, 5 Stars
A wonderfully written book and a must for women of all ages. When 52-year-old Tilda is diagnosed with invisibility she is told that there is no cure and she will continue to disappear until she is invisible. With the help of Selma, who herself overcame her own invisibility, Tilda embarks on a journey of discovery – who she was, who she is and who she wants to be. All she needs to do is reprogram PEARL. This book reinforces that you need to love and see yourself as no-one else can do that the way you can. Nicole, VIC, 5 Stars
Wow! I loved this book. It’s amusing and in places laugh out loud funny yet it deals with a very familiar and serious topic. Women after a certain age often feel a loss of self and visibility in society and this was dealt with in a kind and compassionate way. This book is a bit like a self-help guide wrapped up in a fiction novel and gave me lots to think about. I loved the idea of PEARL and am now more aware of her presence in my life! My only criticism is the sex scene. I’m no prude but I just didn’t think the descriptive sex fitted the tone or style of the book. Steph, NSW, 5 Stars
Absolutely loved this book. I wasn’t sure what was happening and then it was so clever how it is about woman’s becoming invisible. An easy 5/5 star read that I finished in one sitting. Brea, NSW, 5 Stars
Wow. I wasn’t so sure when I first started reading this but after just a few chapters I was hooked. Tilda is a wonderful character and the strong bond with her girlfriends, her insecurities, it all seems so familiar. I think I just read a self-help book! I’ve lived in the past too long and won’t spend another precious minute there. Without giving too much away I will say that I am inspired to try new things, to treat and celebrate myself, focus on the good, not the bad. All this from reading a very thought-provoking novel. I would highly recommend this book. Tracey, NSW, 5 Stars
Funny. Relatable. Insightful. It was delightful to discover how the unbelievable quickly became believable as I was drawn into Tilda’s life and the lives of the other characters, especially those becoming “invisible”. There’s a little, sometimes a lot, of Tilda in every woman. The “get to know and understand yourself” theme was handled so well that I didn’t feel I was being preached at. Many self-help books are written about middle-aged women who feel they are becoming invisible, but this book entertains and makes the reader consider their own emotional well-being without distracting from Tilda’s journey back to visibility. It should be compulsory reading for all women over the age of forty and younger ones who need to learn skills to prevent future invisibility. A truly great read. Sandy, QLD, 5 Stars
Oh my goodness, what a rollercoaster ride that was! I absolutely adored this book. Jane Tara, what an incredible imagination you have. I love the idea of PEARL, our inner voice that we listen to. Being only a year older than Tilda I found that I could totally relate to her and how she felt invisible at times and then she really did start becoming invisible, staring with her little finger disappearing. The journey of self-discovery that Tilda embarks on is at times hilarious, daunting, and downright terrifying but she has the support of her daughters and friends. This story, whilst fiction, reminds us that we need to love ourselves, and really see ourselves. I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say that I certainly needed a hanky too! Thank you to @betterreadingau for the advance copy of this wonderful book. Maree, QLD, 5 Stars
I found this relatable, and an engaging read, funny and yet heartfelt; childhood issues to move on from, engrossing and keeps you wanting more. I would highly recommend this book as its true what happens in society: you feel invisible at times. The meditation and guidance is a self-help for Tilda. Julie, NSW, 5 Stars
Jane Tara’s Tilda Is Visible had me hooked from the opening paragraphs. The story is relatable for women of a certain age and definitely mothers with life experience. The wisdom and inspiration of the narrative felt biographical yet had me reminding myself this is fiction! A personal, laugh out loud moment occurred whilst I was at the grocers, on the checkout queue, with arms full of shopping bags. A young women walked straight into me, we both got a fright, apology accepted and she walked away. I got the giggles and couldn’t stop laughing, the poor young man in front of me thought I was crazy. I felt like Carol, who was my favourite character in the book. In fact I feel I know all the characters in Tilda. These brilliant women’s life stories layered with solidarity, determination, romance and friendship are a balm for the soul. I felt empowered, seen and inspired by the finale. I hope there is a sequel dear Jane. Well done. Margaret, NSW, 5 Stars
Tilda is a lady, 52, with grown up twin daughters. She had been married for 17 years but is now 5 years divorced. Everything seems right but one morning she wakes up and notices her little finger is gone. She runs through her brain trying to think how she lost it but it wouldn’t come to her. She carries on getting ready and when she puts her hair up in a bun, her right ear has also gone. She could feel that it was there, along with her finger but could not see it. She sees her doctor and the doctor explains that it is called INVISIBILTY. Tilda panics and the doctor says she is still there, she hasn’t disappeared. Invisible means it can’t been seem but disappear means completely gone. She learns so much about this and herself through the book with a psychologist, meditation and a help group. This was a great read and I loved the part of Tilda and her actions. Sue, NSW, 5 Stars
In Tilda Is Visible, Jane Tara has taken a common phenomenon, that ageing women feel less and less seen and, with impeccable wisdom and insight, given it a physical manifestation. The potential causes and cures that Tilda pursues to restore her visibility are equally applicable to the condition that plagues many women of a certain vintage in today’s world. Hilarious, heart-warming and hopeful, this is a brilliant debut. Marianne, NSW, 5 Stars
Wow! Tilda is indeed visible! Jane Tara has outdone herself and has had me listening to my inner voice more since reading this book. Thank you and a big congratulations. Jo, VIC, 5 Stars
I absolutely loved reading this book! This book is for anyone who feels they are not seen, invisible, or underappreciated. “If you’ve ever lost sight of yourself, then this book is for you. This is Tilda’s story, my story, and your story.” This is not a self-help book, but as a fiction novel, it goes a long way towards helping those who do not feel seen. So many times I laughed out loud, snorted, and yes, I very nearly peed my pants in laughter! But it also has some moments that made me remember past events that weren’t so great that may have impacted my life now. It is rich, layered, sassy, and very, very relatable! Tilda is a great character. She is in her 50s, divorced, smart, artistic, and not quite feeling as though she got it all right. Some of the lines in this book were just hilariously on point. “Her hair looked like she’d spent a week in a meth lab.” I laughed so much with this one line as I knew that is exactly how my hair looked at that moment. Her attempts at meditation felt like they came straight from me. Every little weird and random thought interrupted her meditation practise. This passage was so very funny. So, this book is definitely one to put on your tbr wishlist, and once read, I feel it is a book that will be reread. I felt better after reading this as it made me want to look at myself and appreciate all the bits, even the annoying ones. Ali, TAS, 5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book. At first, I was a little confused and couldn’t relate to the whole invisibility diagnosis. However, I kept reading and became hooked on Tilda’s journey. I enjoyed her finding herself through photography and the positive support from those around her. It is amazing how positivity and your thoughts can change you. This is a must-read for those going through a mid-life crisis or finding themselves after a divorce. I like how those with a disability were not treated differently and still seen. I would have liked the ending to include more information on her GP’s journey. Tara, WA, 4 Stars
Tilda Is Visible is a fabulous read especially for an ageing woman. A story about learning to love yourself, delivered in a humourous and interesting way. Claire, SA, 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this easy to read book. The underlying subtle reminders of how we see ourselves is a big factor in how others see us is cleverly interwoven as we follow Tilda’s journey of rediscovering herself and how she fits in the world around her. Funny/witty followed by moments of reflection – after all, who hasn’t felt invisible at different times in their life? I am sure a lot of women can relate to this book. If you are looking for a book that reenforces the importance of “you” in a witty relatable inspiring way then this is the book for you. Liz, WA, 4 Stars
Good story about embracing ourselves as we get older and how past traumas really effect the lives we lead. Took a while to get into this book but once a little deep, found it hard to put down. Clever story and writing. Kim, NSW, 4 Stars
This is the story of Tilda Finch. A woman in her 50s, a mother, a successful business owner and a divorcee. Tilda has lost sight of herself, causing her to be diagnosed with Invisibility. This book follows Tilda’s journey, and that of those around her. Will Tilda realise that knowing herself will give her the confidence to be seen again? A lovely, heartwarming, at times hilarious book written by Jane Tara, I highly recommend Tilda Is Visible. Anne, ACT, 4 Stars
Jane Tara’s Tilda Is Visible is such a relatable and endearing story. Women of all ages will see themselves in Tilda. I love the way the author has taken the emotive metaphor of being “invisible” and made it tangible and real, validating how so many individuals feel everyday. She perfectly depicts the notion of being overlooked and not being “seen”. Tilda’s story is inspiring and filled with hope but not in a way that seems unreachable or far-fetched. This book comes with a beautiful message about self-love and not to mention it’s super funny and cheeky too. I loved this book. Chloe, VIC, 4 Stars
Ask any woman over 50 if she has ever felt “invisible” and the answer would probably be a resounding “Yes!” In Jane Tara’s Tilda is Visible, Invisibility is a disease, almost always suffered by women and with no cure. Parts or all of the body disappear from the view of the sufferer and others and, although the missing limbs are definitely still there, the woman is actually invisible. For Tilda Finch it started with her little finger. On the surface, Tilda is a successful businesswoman since her divorce and is determined to fight the disease even if it means following the controversial advice of Selma Nester, a therapist whose belief that healing Invisibility lies within the individual has polarised the medical fraternity and other experts. The author uses Tilda’s search for her true self to raise many thought provoking questions about the ways women perceive themselves and each other and how past traumas can impact later life. The only jarring note was the rather crude two-page sex scene. I understand that it was written to illustrate Tilda’s growing feelings of liberation but it felt to me more like the author was ticking the box labelled Steamy Sex Scene rather than using the authentic voice evident throughout the rest of the book. That being said, I enjoyed the story and would recommend to others. Dianne, QLD, 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book. Tilda Finch is slowly becoming invisible to herself and those around her. Never putting herself first, Tilda has to learn to love herself and her achievements and understand how she became invisible. Her childhood was not good, her marriage was one-sided, she was taken for granted, her thoughts of herself were not embracing. Enter the support group, new friends, Selma, Patrick and finally the belief in herself. A lovely book about self-worth, at times sad, other times a good laugh. Thoroughly recommend this book. Margaret, NSW, 4 Stars
Part self-help book, part overcoming adversity journey and part friendship fiction, Tilda Is Visible is both astonishing and elucidating. This book is an in-depth exploration about seeing, how we see the world, how we see ourselves and others, and our fundamental need to be seen. Tilda’s shift from invisible to invincible is inspirational, and this work of fiction also provides many tips and tools for you to try at home. Taking the issue of invisibility in women as they age from metaphor to literal is a stroke of brilliance, and makes for a very enjoyable read. With laugh out loud lines there is many a true word said in jest, with my favourite being ‘Support groups are like bras – some aren’t that supportive’. WARNING: This book could seriously affect how you see yourself. Michelle, VIC, 4 Stars
Tilda has been diagnosed with invisibility an incurable disease mainly faced by middle-aged women. She then commences a journey to figure out what this means for her and if she can successfully reverse the effects before she completely disappears. Although not quite yet middle aged, I found this novel’s themes and the fears, thoughts and emotions faced by the characters very relatable. It contained many aspects and theories of self care and development which were thought provoking for looking at one’s own life and the important things to focus on to achieve happiness. I enjoyed getting to know the various characters including Tilda herself and the others she creates and continues relationships with along her path. I would love there to be a sequel to continue finding out more about Tilda’s journey and about the back stories and development of all the other characters. Laura, NSW, 4 Stars
Tilda Is Visible is a very relatable and inspiring book. It communicates the power our thoughts and perceptions can have and how we should remove negative thoughts and focus on being positive and loving ourselves as we are. This book was such an easy and enjoyable read. I loved how it’s written with short chapters as it kept me engaged and wanting to read ‘one more chapter’. There was lots of laughing throughout. I love how all of Tilda’s friends and family were so supportive of her. But also how Tilda, Carol and Erica were able to joke and be positive considering their situation and looking at ways to fix and change it rather than being gloomy like the “support group”. Showing just how important it is to have a network of people that will motivate, encourage and support you. Emma, WA, 4 Stars
This is an easy-to-read and entertaining novel with serious intent, using a variety of characters to illustrate the premise that more and more women are becoming gradually invisible in the world. And that this will continue if we don’t cease our constant negative self-talk via “PEARL”: that is, the “Program Everything and Always Repeat Loop”, which recognises patterns of information and continually feeds us a loop of thoughts and internal conversations that feel familiar – so it is all too easy to get trapped into a negative mindset that gradually makes the true us invisible, even to ourselves. Tilda, who co-owns a business selling inspirational quotes on merchandise but doesn’t believe any of them, comes to understand that it’s only by allowing herself to let in new, fresh perspectives and learning to love herself – with all her flaws – that she can be truly visible, seen by herself and others. And of course, a bit of romance doesn’t hurt either… A thought-provoking read, which will linger in your thoughts and inspire many. Amanda, TAS, 4 Stars
What a wonderful story of finding oneself! Often women in this age group feel invisible – they get older and just melt into the background unnoticed. Tilda is diagnosed with disappearing syndrome but fights back to find herself and to be seen! Lots of laugh out loud moments in this gem of a book. With a lovely crew of characters, this was a terrific read. Mark, QLD, 4 Stars
I wanted to love it, but this got my hackles up. I loved the high concept of women (usually in their 50s) becoming literally invisible. I was coming from the perspective of the social phenomenon of older women being overlooked and undervalued in work, media and their private lives. But this invisibility was a self-inflicted disease. I was uncomfortable with the explicit narrative that these women’s fears, traumas, negativity and lack of self-awareness was manifesting this invisibility. So the solution was endless self-analysis, meditation, therapy and positive self-talk. Lines like “you get what you focus on” and “every disease has an emotional root cause” had me seeing red. This took the law of attraction too far for me. There were only so many ways I could read what amounted to “this is your own fault”. Some will find the philosophies in here inspiring. To me, they were low-key victim blaming. I would have liked *some* acknowledgement of the role of society and the value placed on youth and beauty. A broader brush addressing the conventional causes of invisibility might have made me much more receptive to the messages of personal development in this book. Lisa, QLD, 3 Stars
Jane tackles an important topic head on through this original and thought-provoking tale of female courage and friendship, imbued with just the right dose of humour and a little romance. This book will make you think about how your own internal dialogue shapes how you see yourself and the world around you, while cheering the characters on from the sidelines.
