Thrilling Legal Stories: Read Our Review of Sparring Partners by John Grisham

#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham is back with a gripping collection of three thrilling legal stories.

‘Homecoming’ takes us back to Ford County, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend, Mack Stafford, a former lawyer in Clanton who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole some money from his clients, divorced his wife, filed for bankruptcy, and left his family in the middle of the night, never to be heard from again. Until now. Now Mack is back and he’s leaning on his old pals, Jake and Harry Rex, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned.

In ‘Strawberry Moon’, we meet Cody Wallace, a young death row inmate only three hours away from execution. His lawyers can’t save him, the courts slam the door, and the Governor says no to a last minute request for clemency. As the clock ticks down, Cody has only one final request.

In ‘The Sparring Partners’ we meet the Malloy brothers, Kirk and Rusty, two successful young lawyers who inherited a once prosperous firm when its founder, their father, was sent to prison. Kirk and Rusty loathe one another, and speak to each other only when necessary. As the firm disintegrates, the fiasco falls into the lap of Diantha Bradshaw, the only person the partners trust. Can she save the Malloys, or does she take a stand for the first time and try to save herself?

Beginning with The Firm in 1991, John Grisham has published at least one #1 bestseller every year. 350 million copies and nine blockbuster films later and it’s clear that nobody writes drama quite like Grisham. He’s the undisputed master of the legal thriller, and readers know that whenever they pick up a Grisham novel, an excellent read is guaranteed. Now he’s back with Sparring Partners, his first collection of novellas.

Sparring Partners is a gripping, propulsive and unputdownable read that consists of three thrilling stories, packed with plenty of twists and turns, all linked by the common thread of law. For long-time fans of Grisham, this book is an absolute treat, featuring some familiar places and faces from his previous books. But readers new to Grisham’s fiction shouldn’t despair – Sparring Partners can certainly be read as a standalone and serves as the perfect introduction to his work.

If you love legal thrillers, you can’t go past Sparring Partners. Suspenseful, powerful, funny and very engaging, this is yet another edge-of-your-seat page-turner from Grisham.

          1. David McClelland says:

I have read every book that John has written with the exception of the Theodore Boone novels. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them however I do have to tell you I am very disappointed with the format of Sparring Partners. Had I paid any attention to the format I doubt that I would have purchased it. Now that I have read the first one and realize there is no conclusion to the story with the exception of the one provided I am certain I wouldn’t have purchased it. I am very disappointing because I was very much looking forward to it.
