Two couples, four ironclad friendships, a small coastal town… the perfect ingredients for a haunting and unputdownable domestic noir.

“It seemed simple at first – folding one lie over the next. She had become expert at feathering over the cracks to ensure her life appeared the same. But inside, it didn’t feel fixed.”

Lago Point is a small Australian coastal town. Abbi was an only child, raised with a transient group of foster siblings. She’d loved the mayhem and in particular connected to Blake, who she thinks of as a brother, and is now one of two policemen in town. Abbi is married to Will, a doctor, and they have a five-year-old daughter, Eadie. Abbi’s best friend Hannah is a schoolteacher and in a relationship of sorts with Blake.

Two couples, four ironclad friendships, their lives completely intertwined in the perfect coastal holiday town. With salt-stung houses perched like lifeguards overlooking the shore, Lago Point is the scene of postcards, not crime scenes. And yet these four fascinating characters are caught in their own tangled webs of deceit after something happens the day of the Moon Festival. It could have been left behind, they all could have moved on with their lives, but secrets have a habit of rising to the surface, especially in small towns.

The revealing of one secret leads to another, and when the truth washes in to their beachside community, so do the judgements: victim, or vigilante, who will forgive, who will betray? Not all relationships survive. Nor do all residents.

This book takes its time, especially in the first half. It’s engrossing, and yet the twists and turns aren’t the focus… it’s the tension that builds between each twist that keeps you reading. The setting of Lago Point is the perfect location for this tension, and the small town feel literally springs from the page. The reader can feel the tension build like storm clouds over the Lago Point sea.

Just as the tension hits its peak the book picks up pace and sweeps you through the reveal of multiple secrets. The book delves into some heavy themes, such as child abuse, but does so deftly. It’s obvious that now on her fourth book, Kylie Kaden has hit her stride and produced another excellent addition to the Aussie Domestic Noir genre.

Kaden’s writing is polished and her characters multilayered, with complex relationships. Especially complex is the relationship between Abbi and Blake – and Kaden has created an intense bond here, that is never black and white but every shade of grey. Abbi is a fascinating character who lies to protect those she loves, and yet the flip side of that can be controlling. Of all the characters, Blake has the most to lose, and is the one you feel for, but all the characters are incredibly well drawn.

The Day the Lies Began is a gripping and compelling read. A great weekend read that you won’t be able to put down.
