We are excited to announce that the sequel to the bestselling The Tattooist of Auschwitz is coming in October this year.
Titled Cilka’s Journey, it follows the story of teenager Cilka Klein, a key character from The Tattooist of Auschwitz who saved Lale Sokolov’s life.
Cilka is only sixteen when she is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1942. Commandant Schwarzhuber takes an immediate liking to Cilka and her beautiful long hair, separating her from the other women prisoners. Although the arrangement is not ideal for Cilka, it results in her ultimate survival.
However, what once saved Cilka comes back to haunt her, when, after liberation, she is charged as a collaborator for sleeping with the enemy and sent to Siberia. In a Siberian prison camp, Cilka faces many challenges, some new, and some painfully familiar, such as the unwanted attention of the guards. She finds solace in a female doctor who takes Cilka under her wing, teaching her to care for and tend to the ill in the camp. Despite facing death, terror, and brutality on a daily basis, Cilka learns that there is still room for love in her heart when she nurses a man named Ivan back to health…
Morris said that after writing The Tattooist of Auschwitz, there was an overwhelming response from readers who wanted to know what had happened to Cilka. ‘I too wanted to find out more about this extraordinary young woman,’ said Morris. ‘So I have decided to honour Cilka by using her life as the inspiration for this novel.’
The Tattooist of Auschwitz was a huge debut success, remaining on Nielsen BookScan’s Australian top 10 bestseller list for 24 consecutive weeks, and listed at number six for all books in 2018. News of the sequel comes as a thrilling surprise to the many Heather Morris fans world-wide.
