Epic Story of Forbidden Love: Read Our Review of My Soul Twin by Nino Haratischvili

Eight years have passed since Stella last saw Ivo, but when he returns, the reunion of their unconventional family will change the course of her ordinary life. As children, Stella and Ivo grew close as their parents embarked on an affair that would shatter both families. Later, as teenagers, their own relationship would be the cause of further scandal. Now, as adults, they set out on an odyssey to uncover the truth about another family’s past, and to understand their own.

My Soul Twin is written by Nino Haratischvili, the award-winning, million copy bestselling author of The Eighth Life and translated from German to English by award-winning translator Charlotte Collins. It is an intense love story about forbidden desire, the ties that bind us, and whether we can ever truly forget what we leave behind.

Written in the vein of Wuthering Heights, Haratischvili’s fourth novel is an epic, modern-day love story that follows the tumultuous relationship shared between Stella and Ivo. The novel shifts back and forth in time, from the shared trauma of their childhood to the present day when Ivo shows up on her doorstep, shaking the foundations of Stella’s life and stirring up old memories she’d rather forget. Haratischvili seamlessly brings all these strands together to tell the story of two people – soul mates – who can’t help but feel drawn to one and other, despite everyone and everything in their lives trying to drive them apart. When reading this, one is absolutely reminded of the bond shared between Heathcliffe and Catherine in Charlotte Bronte’s classic; a bond that, while toxic, defies all earthly odds.

Lyrical, raw, and beautifully written, this is a story of love and desire, of guilt and forgiveness, that builds to a dramatic and agonising end. With My Soul Twin, Haratischvili has delivered another absorbing read that is sure to appeal to new and old fans alike.
