Great Audiobooks for the Holidays, Inspired by the Top 100

Great Audiobooks for the Holidays, Inspired by the Top 100

Are you travelling this Christmas? Whether you’re travelling by plane, train or packing the kids into the car, one way to pass time while you travel is to listen to audio books.

Audiobook sales are booming as readers everywhere discover that you don’t have to actually read to read… you can also listen. Audio books are now a popular way to pass time on the commute to work, either listening in the car or while you’re on public transport. But they’re also great for when you’re on longer trips. These holidays I’m packing the kids and the dog into the car and heading north, and Bolinda audiobooks will be lined up ready to go.

Here are a few great tales from the 2018 Better Reading Top 100 that have excellent audio versions.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

An excellent story for adults and older kids, about Liesel, a girl growing up in Germany during World War II who steals books and finds comfort in words.

Cloudstreet by Tim Winton

Perfect for a roadtrip, an Australian classic that takes the listener into the world of two wholly believable working-class families in post-WWII Perth.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

We loved the book, and the TV series… now try the audio version. Pirriwee Public is a beautiful little beachside primary school where children are taught that ‘sharing is caring’. So how has the annual School Trivia Night ended in full-blown riot with one dead parent?

Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton

In one of Trent Dalton’s ABIA award speeches, he thanked Stig Wemyss, the voice actor who brilliantly narrates the book. Have a listen to not only Dalton’s smash hit, but Wemyss’s astounding read of it.

The Greatest Gift by Rachael Johns

Rachael John’s writes fantastic escapist women’s fiction, perfect for a road trip. The Greatest Gift is heart-warming story of a woman who wants nothing else than to be a mum, and one who never wanted to be a mother.

Scarecrow by Matthew Reilly

My teenage son is dyslexic and Matthew Reilly’s audiobooks are a huge hit, and this is already on our Borrowbox. In this one, it is the greatest bounty hunt in history. There are 15 targets, the finest warriors in the world – commandos, spies, terrorists. And they must all be dead by 12 noon, today.

What audio books are you downloading these holidays?

Finally, time is running out to cast your vote for the Better Reading Top 100, and to go into the draw to win all 100 books. We close voting on December 19, so head on over now and let us know what your favourite book was this year.
