From internationally bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand new Shadowhunters trilogy. Evil is hiding in plain sight and the only thing more dangerous than fighting demons is falling in love.
Cordelia Carstairs is one of the Nephilim, or a Shadowhunter – a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. These demons remain unseen by the Mundane – the normal people – so only the Shadowhunters can protect the world. But when Cordelia’s father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to Edwardian London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off in a fortuitous match, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride.
Cordelia is excited to be in London, despite the reason behind their move. London is full of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. And Cordelia’s best friend Lucie Herondale lives in London and they are training to become parabatai – Nephilim warriors who are lifelong partners, sworn to protect each other by oath. It also doesn’t hurt that Lucie’s brother James is living in London as well. Cordelia has been in love with James for most of her young life, but needs to hide this secret love as James is sworn to marry someone else.
But all Cordelia’s plans for her new life are blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like the ones Shadowhunters have fought before – these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Now trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover they have their own connection to a dark legacy. What does this legacy mean for them, and their Shadowhunter powers? And Cordelia will find out just how cruel being a hero can be.
Chain of Gold is the stunning first book in brand new Shadowhunter series The Last Hours. The protagonists in this series are the children of the characters we fell in love with in The Infernal Devices, and many familiar and well-loved characters make appearances throughout the novel. While this is a continuation of the Shadowhunter Chronicles, you can read this one without needing to have read any of the other books. The story is its own complete narrative, and may even encourage the reader to go out and find Clare’s other novels to read.
Cassandra Clare well and truly delivers again. She is fantastic at writing fantasy fiction that will draw readers in and keep them involved. Chain of Gold is another stellar example of just how ‘right’ Clare gets it. This is recommended for ages 14+, and it is a breathtaking and thrilling adventure that will entrance and delight – and make you count down the days until the next one is released!
